New Mexico State scored its final points against the Gophers – a 45-yard field goal – with 14:10 left in the second quarter. Fresno State did not score against Minnesota until it created a turnover in the red zone and scored a touchdown on a short field with 20 seconds left in the third quarter.
Between those two scores, the Gophers did not allow a point for 88:50.
Minnesota has now held five opponents scoreless in a half under Coach Fleck and defensive coordinator Robb Smith. In addition to Fresno State (first half) and New Mexico State (second half), Minnesota did not allow a point in the second half last season to Buffalo, Oregon State and Middle Tennessee.
