At the junior high and high school level, I have coached both genders in a couple sports... Its interesting the differences in personality between genders though both can be fiercely competitive. I am saying this while watching the Big Ten softball tournament.
Girls have a natural symmetry and wanting to do things together, more than the guys. At least that is my experience... Watch team pictures for instance or any pictures of groups for that matter... Girls try their hardest to create a symmetry in most of their formal photos, whether it be by size of the girl in height or expressions they make or how they dress. Lets say 4 girls are wearing blue and everyone else was wearing red.. You will either see 2 on each side of the photo, equally apart or all 4 girls together wearing blue in the middle. With guys, you just hope to get them all in the photo. I have seen it so many times with girls. Much more than guys.. You constantly hear chants or choruses that have been put in sync by the teams on the bench, where you dont hear that from guys..All the girls on the team doing it together.. It is seemingly part of the gender differences and something I enjoy in watching both genders in sports...
Of course, there are goods and bads about coaching each gender. From coaching, I can tell you my experience is that when things go south for the girls in a game, it is harder to get it turned around than with guys.. If one or two are affected negatively, the whole team seems to follow much more with girls than in guys. The positives are extreme, either way.. I guess I post this to say that watching sports in BOTH GENDERS is enjoyable but there are unique differences and that seems to add to the interest more than detract. Personality comes out as stressful situations reveal a person.. It is what is great about college athletics.
