watching him yesterday, observers wondering how he could fit in his uniform...kid looks to have bulked up...hometown paper story confirms:
I'm
going to always try to get better. Even every practice, you find things
you can work on. You're always developing. You just try to get better
at recognizing coverages and seeing defenses. I would say that's
probably the biggest thing, but within every practice, you find some
little things and some mechanical things, some read type things you can
work on. I wouldn't say anything specific, but if I had to, I would say
reading coverages and defenses faster.
Our biggest thing this
year is play 60. Basically play all 60 minutes. That's something we
struggled with some of the games last year. We felt like we could have
won, but we just didn't play well in the fourth quarter, at the end of
the game. That's really the biggest thing that coach (Jerry) Kill's been
preaching on, is play 60, just finish and play all 60 minutes.
I'm
weighing about 233 (pounds) right now. I put on a pretty good amount of
weight. I started to put on some weight during the season last year. I
kind of talked to our nutrionist and told her I want to put on some
weight in a good way. So she helped me with that. I'm stuck in that
230-range, and I feel good about that. I mean, when you're out there,
with the offense we run, running the quarterbacks, you got to be able to
take a beating. So I felt like it'd be better to just be a little
bigger. Some of those linebackers and D-linemen are pretty huge. You
want to be able to take a beating. I just felt getting bigger would help
me with that. There are some pretty big dudes.
I've always taken my nutrition stuff pretty seriously. But with the new
NCAA rules, where they (schools) can feed us more, it's pretty helpful,
because you don't have to spend as much money on groceries. There's
always food there for you. That was pretty big. Just some little things I
could add to add some more calories, drinking more milk. Stuff like
that. We get breakfast five days. Then there's sandwiches and granola
bars up in the players' lounge. We get dinner five days. So it's really
nice. She didn't add that much more stuff. Just adding a peanut butter
and jelly here, a couple glasses of milk here, getting 800 more
calories. That'll just help get my weight up. Another thing I started
doing is pretty much just eating all day. Eating snacks. Eating once an
hour, or whatever. That's another thing she kind of implemented for me.
I'm a pretty big eater. It's kind of gross, but whatever.
