Recruiting background: Potts committed to Minnesota on June 20 over three Power 5 offers and multiple Ivies. He listed Rutgers, Syracuse, Temple, Virginia Tech, Northwestern (no offer), and Maryland (no offer) as the schools recruiting him the hardest shortly before committing. Joe Rossi and Kenni Burns are his primary recruiters from Minnesota.

Treyson Potts is my sleeper recruit on offense. His sophomore film is outstanding, and if he makes a full recovery from his knee injury, I think Minnesota could be fighting off many big programs ala Rashod Bateman last year. Luckily for Minnesota, Potts sounded genuine when telling me that he enjoyed his visit to Minnesota more than places like Notre Dame and Penn State. I think he found a good fit in Minnesota, but that’s not to say there won’t be some fans sweating over his recruitment if he has the senior season I think he will.

The first thing I like about his vision is his vision -- he finds the hole and trusts it. He eyes finding and inserting defenders from the second level while hitting the hole, setting up great cuts to get through to the second level. His vision for a sophomore was excellent. See below:

He’s both quick and fast and can turn the corner on outside runs.

His elusiveness is impressive. He’s shifty, has an excellent juke move, an excellent jump cut, and is difficult for tacklers to bring down by themselves. After making a defender miss, he accelerates out of his break very well.

I’m also impressed with his physicality. As a sophomore, he was physical for his size. He lowers his shoulders and delivers a pop at the point of contact. He runs his feet through contact very well.

Weaknesses..? His tape didn’t show any pass blocking, but his high school coach told me he’s one of the best pass blocking backs he’s ever had. At 5’10” and 190 pounds, I guess he’s not a “big” back but he’s by no means small. Alex thought a weakness was trying to pop runs to the outside too much.

Potts’ film is very well-rounded, especially for a sophomore. He’s a talent. I think he’ll do big things as a Gopher if he’s able to fully recover from his knee injury, and Trey and his coach have both said he’s feeling 100%.
