I have literally no idea of the ins and outs of recruiting and how offers are given, accepted or declined. However, I'm sure there are variances with virtually every coaching staff.
But, after the recent de-commit of the Michigan o-lineman, I got to thinking (dangerous, I know)...What if PJ only accepted verbals under the pretense that he already knows what each recruit's dream school(s) is/are, and if one were to offer, he already knows that they would de-commit? Wouldn't that make sense and make life a little easier on the staff to accept a commitment as a reservation, while also having a strong Plan B? Sure those dream offers come and mess up a nice commit, but a lot of times they don't.
I mean, if a recruit has 20 other schools he would rather be at than the U, but we are his best option, I would make the assumption that PJ (or any coach) wouldn't take that commitment reservation. However, If a High 3-star or 4-star from Illinois wanted to stay in the midwest and was excited to commit with the U, but had a dream of playing ball at Notre Dame, Michigan or Ohio State, would you expect PJ to turn them away if it didn't appear an offer was coming from one of them? If it was made clear that those were the ONLY schools he would de-commit for? I would like those odds and be willing to take that chance.
I'd be curious to know if that is how it's done today at most schools that are like us. I mean, it would make the most sense. Why not be up front about all of that stuff at the beginning?
Anyway, nothing groundbreaking here except...
