Tuesday night, Tre Williams did what we expected he would do 24 hours earlier. He committed to play basketball at the University of Minnesota.

Williams and his parents took an official visit last weekend. After speaking with Tre's father, Marvin Jr, on Monday, it seemed like a good bet that his son would make this announcement.

"They had everything lined up for us. We spoke with trainers, tutors, and academic advisors. They told us there are nineteen Fortune 500 companies located downtown. They have people that come in and give lectures about that as well as the internships that are provided. They had everything covered on the visit from A to Z,” Mr. Williams told us.

He added, "Some schools address basketball, but when it comes to academics they don’t have a lot to say. Minnesota just didn’t talk about it. Tre is looking to major in Business Administration and Sports Management. They have both of those covered. We were blown away how well everything was planned out.”

The father also raved about the facilities.

“They have $100 million dollar facilities. They put big time money into them. Their nutrition program and strength and conditioning programs were very impressive. I’ve seen those programs before, but never anything like they had. It was wild. They had everything scheduled. This is not a slight to Pepperdine, but Minnesota made them look like a high school. I’ve never seen a basketball facility like that. Usually, basketball has to take a back seat to football at most places, but at Minnesota basketball is right there with football.”

We spoke again to Tre's father, and naturally he is a happy man.

"Tre has worked very hard academically and athletically. We are pleased to have him attend the University of Minnesota to pursue his basketball and career aspirations. We would like to thank Coach Pitino and his staff for believing in Tre and welcoming him to the Gopher family."

Williams is a 6-foot-5 wing, who is originally from The Colony, Texas but now attends Wasatch Academy in Utah.

Blue Zertuche of TexasHoops.com of the Rivals Network has seen him play numerous times and gave us the following assessment of his game.

"Tre has been a physical and skilled player. It goes back to his sophomore year in high school while playing at The Colony. He has the ability to take over a game and he does it with a power basketball mentality. He can beat you in a lot of ways. He is a skilled ball handler and passer, and you can add his ability to score on all three levels.

Tre is the type of guard who will keep the defense off balance with his shot then his explosive step to the basket. He has grown into a college ready player with the body and competitiveness to compete at the Big Ten level."
