It's safe to say the Gophers have enjoyed having Winfield Jr. back after he missed the majority of 2017 with an injury. We caught up with the redshirt junior before the season started to get to know him off the field:
Gopher Sports: What is your favorite part about playing at TCF Bank Stadium?
Antoine Winfield Jr.: That would probably be the fans. Making big plays in front of everybody, that's my favorite part about playing there.
GS: What does Gopher football mean to you?
AWJ: It means a lot to me. Playing here under Coach Fleck teaches you that it's more than a game. There are a whole bunch of life lessons that you learn from playing this game.
GS: How did you prepare for the 2018 season?
AWJ: Just by staying healthy. Last year I had a lot of injuries and I feel like this year I've worked smarter and played harder, trying to keep my body healthy.
GS: What is your favorite Coach Fleck saying or phrase?
AWJ: 'Let the other guy get tired,' he says that the most.
GS: Who in the Big Ten do you enjoy playing the most?
AWJ: Definitely Ohio State, I can't wait to play them this year.
GS: Would you rather be eight feet tall or three feet tall and why?
AWJ: Eight feet tall because then I would play basketball.
GS: What is something most people don't know about you?
AWJ: I broke my orbital bone when I was in fifth grade playing football. I was out for about half a year, I couldn't do anything. It was bad, very bad.
GS: What is your favorite part about the new football facility?
AWJ: The weight room. The weight room is incredible, definitely an upgrade.
GS: What is the best sport to hangout on campus?
AWJ: The Radius apartment, you have everything there. It has a hot tub, it has everything.
