Under the Helmet: Calvin Swenson

Redshirt sophomore Calvin Swenson played in eight games for the Gophers as a redshirt freshman. This season he is a backup safety that saw action on defense against New Mexico State and is one of the few players on the team to play on every special teams units. After Minnesota's season opening victory Swenson was put on scholarship by head coach P.J. Fleck. We caught up with him before the start of the season.
Gopher Sports: Why does the team call you the doc?
Calvin Swenson: They call me doctor because i'm a pre-med major and that is what I want to do, go to medical school.
GS: How do you balance a major like physiology and playing football?
CS: It's definitely a lot of work. You have to have really good time management skills and do your homework and work hard.
GS: Do you have any pregame rituals or superstitions?
CS: Not really, no. I just kind of listen to music and get into the zone.
GS: What is your go-to song to get you pumped up?
CS: Oh, anything by Future.
GS: What is your favorite part about being on this team?
CS: It's like a big brotherhood. We all like each other and we do a lot of fun stuff together.
GS: What are some skills you have been improving on to be on your best game this season?
CS: In the weight room I have really been focusing on getting stronger. On the field i've been working on man coverage skills.
GS: What is the best spot to hang out on campus?
CS: My favorite spot to hang out, especially during the summer, is the Spectrum because they have a pool outside and a hot tub, it's just a fun time.
GS: What are you most looking forward to this season?
CS: I think it will be interesting to see how much the team has grown through the offseason and continues to grow throughout the year.
GS: If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
CS: Being able to fly. It would be cool to fly from place to place.
GS: Do you prefer Q'doba or Chipotle?
CS: Personally I like to go to Q'doba just because I live at the Marshall and it's a closer trek.
GS: What do you get there?
CS: I'll get a burrito bowl with double meat, chicken and steak with cheese, guacamole and sour cream.
GS: What is one thing you cannot live without?
CS: I would say Netflix just because it's something you can use to relax to go to bed at night.
GS: What is the best show on Netflix to bingewatch?
CS: My favorite used to be How I Met Your Mother, but then they took it off, so that is kind of sad.
GS: What are you currently watching?
CS: Right now I am watching the new episodes of Shameless that they put on and then on Hulu I'm watching Power, which is also a good show.
GS: Who is the best Fortnite player on the team?
CS: I have heard Kamal (Martin) is pretty good, but I don't know if he is the best player.
