It is 50 years ago this week that University of Dayton overachieved and worked to become NCAA runnerups to UCLA in the NCAA finals... That 1967 Dayton team still gets together from time to time to reminisce. Big time overachievers and guys that were not intimidated by anyone. Led by Don May.
Anyways, the coach of that team was Don Donoher.. Donoher grew up in Toledo then played at University of Dayton... Donoher went to the military for 2 years after college and came back as a scout for his alma mater.. His college coach got cancer and passed the team onto Donoher.. His college coach ended up passing away so Donoher got the full time job in 1964. He was a very successful coach up to 1989 when he retired... Loves kids and basketball while being a true disciplinarian... Not in a Bobby Knight way but a quiet strong way. Donoher was an assistant coach for the 1984 gold medal winning US Olympic basketball team that exposed the world to Michael Jordan.
The neat part is at age 85, he still helps coach at the HS level at Middletown Fenwick in SW Ohio.. Just north of Cincinnati...He still lives in Dayton... Loves it because he got to coach his grandson... Pride is not an issue with Donoher.. But impacting lives the right way is the issue with him... Love to see when coaches make their lives to be a good example for others, even when most people at that age are in nursing homes and not coaching young kids.
