We have wings/SG all over the place for the 2016-17 Gopher basketball team but we are in tough shape for PGs.. Jordan Murphy proved to be the on-court stud of the freshman class last year but if there is one player I would love to see make a huge gain from last year is Dupree McBrayer.. I like that kid as I think he has good basketball sense on the court.. Yes, he needs to improve his shot and make steady gains in most areas but I see something in that kid that says "bright future". Right now, we ONLY have 1 PG and that is Nate Mason.. McBrayer and Amir Coffey will have to handle it some but we are in trouble if Mason gets hurt or something else, off court, happens.
As far as scholarships for next year, most think it will be 3(Springs, Buggs' scholly, and a yet unnamed transfer that always happens). Honestly, I see the possibility of even more. If Gaston is the transfer out AND the worst case scenario with Reggie Lynch happens, we could have 4 schollies to play with for next season.. Then, I think one of the wings who does not get the playing time may depart so I think a maximum of 5 is a possibility, however remote that chance may be..... I dont think it is inconceivable that we grab 2 PGs in the next class, if that scenario existed. Ones' thinking Wright and Davison do have to consider, however, that the TIMING of when the Gophers would know if that scholarship scenario exists. Both may be committed by the time those Gophers decide to leave or cases decided. I HOPE NO ONE TRANSFERS SO I AM NOT FOR RUNNING A KID OFF FOR A BETTER PLAYER.. But that 'fine line' gets walked by the coaches as they tell kids whether they will play in the future... I think 4 will exist next year, NO INFORMATION TO SUPPORT THAT, so 2 Bigs and 2 PGs will be in our future.. Mason will be a senior so those young guys will have a year to learn from him.
These are the 4 scholarships that I feel will open up for 2017, in total:
Springs' scholly
Buggs' scholly
A wing will leave.
Either Lynch gets booted, or if not, Gaston transfers.
MY IDEAL CLASS WOULD BE THEO JOHN, JERICHO SIMS, McKINLEY WRIGHT, either Isaiah Washington or Brad Davison.
