I was talking to a friend who love sports about records that I dont think would ever be equalled or surpassed... In baseball, the one that comes to mind the most is not Pete Rose's hits mark(which is incredible) or Cal RIpken's consecutive games played streak... I think of RICKEY HENDERSON'S STOLEN BASE RECORD.
Henderson had over 1400 stolen bases in his career, which is a Major League Baseball record.. To put it in perspective, you would have to AVERAGE........AVERAGE........AVERAGE 70 stolen bases a year for 20 YEARS to even get close to his record.. There are probably only a half dozen players or less who had over 70 stolen bases in JUST ONE YEAR, over the LAST 30 YEARS besides Ricky Henderson. You had 5-6 year stretches where guys like Kenny Lofton(in the 90s) from Cleveland had big seasons in stolen bases or a few seasons where Jacoby Ellsbury had close to or over 70 stolen bases in a year. Brian Hunter had a couple of big seasons in stolen bases and I think Juan Pierre had close to 70 one season.. And you would have to do that for over 20 years to catch up to Henderson... BASEBALL IS NOT PLAYED THAT WAY ANYMORE WHERE STEALS ARE A BIG PART OF THE GAME.. It is not like the days of Maury Wills or Lou Brock. Or even Rod Carew. Now, the philosophy is "DONT TAKE THE BAT OUT OF THE HANDS OF THE BIG HITTERS" so 'small ball' which includes stolen bases, is not in fashion anymore and the statistics prove it. I think Bonds' HR record or Ripken's straight games streak would be more likely to get passed(I think neither will ever happen) than Henderson's stolen base record... What most people don't realize is that Henderson was in the top 100, all time, in home runs hit when he retired, which is amazing for a leadoff hitter.. He hit close to 300 career homers. He may have had personal struggles but he was one of baseball's most exciting players for a very long time.
WHICH GOPHER LEGEND HOLDS RECORDS AT THE U, THAT WE WOULD TALK ABOUT, THAT WILL PROBABLY NEVER GET SURPASSED??
