Minnesota does not draft until the 26th pick in the first round of the MLB draft starting tomorrow.. But the Twins will have 4 picks in the top 100. WE ALL KNOW THE TWINS NEED PITCHING, especially quality relievers.. But the draft philosophy of Sean Johnson(director of Scouting), Derek Falvey, and Thad Levine is to get hitters early in the draft.
Their thinking is that they can get pitchers later and develop them. The Twins have a few that will probably have a shot at the majors, next season or the 2nd half of this season towards the end. This year is not considered a strong year for college talent but decent talent at the high school level, both in pitching and hitting. I would just like to see them get some dependable bullpen help via trade or through the draft. I dont think we will see anyone from this draft on the Twins roster for at least 3-4 years.
I also have the opinion that the Twins need to have better help for hitting coaching. We are not a good 2 -strike hitting club. I know they want to get the pitching count up on opposing pitchers but I think we need to get a better eye and get more aggressive and focused, earlier in the counts.
I hate the thought of being "sellers" in the 2nd half of the season but that may be the case. I think the obvious ones that are trade bait are Miguel Sano and Josh Donaldson. I hate the thought of trading Berrios or Maeda. But lack of production and injuries have limited Sano and Donaldson and I am not sure what we are going to get for either of them... Nelson Cruz will get mentioned but he is the heart of the team in the lockerroom and the field. I am not sure anyone is off the board as far as trading, this year. But one thing is for sure in that we really are hurting from losing a couple relief pitchers in the last offseason and we have not replaced them very well.
