MARCUS JENKINS

Coaching Experience:
Associate Head Coach, University of Richmond, 2018-Present
Assistant Coach, University of Richmond, 2015-18
Assistant Coach, Princeton University, 2011-15
Director of Basketball Operations, University of Richmond, 2007-11
Assistant Coach, Fairfield (Mont.) High School, 2006-07

Jenkins has been a member of Richmond's staff for the last six seasons and has served as the Spiders Associate Head Coach since June 2018.

A proven recruiter, Jenkins and the Spiders posted a 14-9 record in the COVID-shortened 2020-21 season and advanced to the NIT Quarterfinals. Jenkins oversaw scouting operations for the team's biggest win of the season: an upset over 10th-ranked Kentucky at Rupp Arena in the championship game of the Bluegrass Showcase. That win, the first road victory over an AP top-10 opponent in school history, propelled Richmond to 19th in the Associated Press Top 25 poll, the highest ranking for the Spiders in 63 years.

Jenkins helped engineer the Spiders turnaround in 2019-20, when Richmond went 24-7 to tie the school record for regular-season wins and increased its win total from 2018-19 by 11, tied for the third-largest increase in all of Division I. Following the season, he was selected to participate in the prestigious 2020 TopConnect seminar, which provides leadership training and networking opportunities for the nation's top assistant coaches. In July 2020, Jenkins was named one of the top five assistant coaches in the Atlantic 10 as a result of a survey of A-10 staffs conducted by Stadium.

Jenkins returned to Richmond in 2015 after spending four years on the coaching staff at Princeton University. In Jenkins’s years at Princeton from 2011 to 2015, he helped the Tigers to four straight winning seasons and appearances in the CBI in 2012 and 2014. Jenkins was also one of 14 college coaches selected to take part in the NCAA Black Coaches and Administrators (BCA) Achieving Coaching Excellence (ACE) program.
His first experience in college coaching came in 2007, when Mooney hired Jenkins at Richmond as the Director of Basketball Operations. In his first four years with the Spiders, Jenkins helped Richmond to four postseason appearances including an NCAA at-large bid in 2010 and an Atlantic 10 championship and Sweet 16 appearance in 2011.
A 2004 graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, Jenkins played basketball under Mooney, who was serving as the Falcons associate head coach. Jenkins led Air Force to the NCAA Tournament in 2004, the school’s first tourney appearance since 1962. His hard work and unselfish play earned him the team’s Falcon Award for that season.
After graduating, Jenkins served his three-year Air Force commitment in Malmstrom Air Force Base in Great Falls, Mont., as a logistics officer. He also worked as an assistant coach at Fairfield (Mont.) High School in 2006-07.
He and his wife, Melissa, have two daughters, Malia and Madelyn, and a son, Myles.
