Zach Sanders takes silver, Tony Nelson bronze at Bill Farrell International in New York

NEW YORK - Minnesota Training Center and Minnesota Storm athletes Zach Sanders and Tony Nelson will return to Minnesota with medals after the Bill Farrell Memorial International finished up on Sunday at the New York Athletic Club in New York City.
At 57kg, Sanders finished with a silver medal after winning four matches to reach the final. Tyler Graff would quickly pick off Sanders 10-0 to win the gold. He opened up with a 5-4 win over Jered Cortez before getting by Japan’s Rei Kuwaki 2-1. In the quarterfinals, it was another tight win by Sanders, a 2-0 decision over Frank Perrelli. In the semifinals, Sanders topped upstart Ali Naser 7-0. Naser had earlier defeated 2012 Olympian Sam Hazewinkel.
The silver was Sanders’ second silver medal of the year. He took silver back in April at the Pan American Championships in Santiago, Chile.
Nelson won the bronze medal at 125kg, topping rival Tyrell Fortune 3-2 in the third-place match. Nelson opened with wins over Canada’s Korey Jarvis (3-2) and defeated Fortune 2-1 to reach the semifinals. Nelson would fall to reigning two-time NCAA champion Nick Gwiazdowski 11-0 before rebounding with wins over Matt Meuleners (5-1) and the final win over Fortune.
For Nelson, it was his third medal of the year. He finished with a bronze medal at the Dave Schultz back in January and a bronze medal at the Granma Cup in Cuba in February.
In a loaded field at 65kg, Nick Dardanes, Chris Dardanes and Jayson Ness all went 1-2, while Bebeto Yewah went 2-2. Ness opened up with an 11-10 win over Korea’s Su-Hyeon Park, but then fell to Nazar Kulchytskyy of the Titan Mercury Wrestling Club 9-2. Ness would injury default following the loss.
Nick Dardanes opened with a 13-0 technical fall over Canada’s Michael Asselstine, but would fall in back-to-back matches to past NCAA champions Kellen Russell and Kendric Maple. Chris Dardanes fell to Jason Chamberlain 7-2 in his first bout, then rebounded to defeat Korea’s Park 4-2. Maple would end the day for the former Golden Gopher with an 8-3 victory.
Yewah represented the Storm and his native Cameroon at 65kg and went 2-2. Yewah fell to Chase Pami 3-1 in the opening round then picked up wins over Seung-Hwa Choi of Korea (12-2) and C.J. Hudson of Canada (7-0) before being eliminated from medal contention by Bulgaria’s Filip Stefanov 6-4.
At 97kg, Scott Schiller went 1-2, picking up a victory over former Rider wrestler Don McNeil in the consolations. Schiller was defeated by Cayle Byers (16-6) and Micah Burak by fall.
