MINNEAPOLIS
– Minnesota wrestling will be represented by five Gophers this weekend at the 2024 U23 Nationals and U20 World Team Trials in Geneva, Ohio.

Redshirt freshman Max McEnelly (86 kg) and incoming freshmen Charlie Millard (74 kg) and Koy Hopke (125 kg) are all scheduled to compete in the U20 Freestyle competition, while redshirt freshman Rhett Koenig (63 kg) is set to take part in U20 Greco-Roman. In addition, transfer Clayton Whiting is scheduled to compete at 79 kg in the U23 Freestyle tournament.

The World Team Trials take place May 31 through June 2 at the Spire Institute and will be streamed on FloWrestling.

Koenig will open the competition Friday at 9 a.m. CT with his Greco-Roman tournament, while the U20 Freestyle tournament takes place Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m. CT and the U23 Freestyle takes place over Saturday and Sunday.

Koenig was limited to just seven matches this year at 141 pounds, going 3-4 at open tournaments. He made his collegiate debut at the Jim Koch Open with a 2-1 record, finishing as runner-up. Koenig also competed at the Soldier Salute, sporting a 1-3 record. He came in fourth at last month's 2024 US Open Championships in Greco-Roman at 63 kg.

McEnelly was 15-0 this past year at 184 pounds for Minnesota, including a last-second win over then-No. 22 Brian Soldano at Rutgers in his dual debut. McEnelly recorded a team-best eight tech falls and added one pin and one major decision on the year. He won titles at the Bison Open, Daktronics Open, Cougar Clash and Soldier Salute. Last month, McEnelly earned a third-place finish at 86 kg at the U.S. Open Championships.

Millard hails from Mequon, Wis., and attends Homestead High School. Ranked 29th on MatScouts' Final Big Board, he was a two-time state champion as he won as a senior at 157 pounds in Division I and as a junior at 160. As a freshman he placed fourth at 138 pounds, then moved up to 152 pounds as a sophomore and claimed second place. Millard placed seventh at 74 kg at the US Open Championships.

A native of Amery, Wis., and Amery High School, Hopke ranked ninth overall on MatScouts' Final Big Board. He was also WIWrestle's top pound-for-pound wrestler in the state of Wisconsin. Hopke is a four-time Division II State Champion, winning three titles at 220 pounds before claiming the heavyweight crown as a senior. Like McEnelly, Hopke also placed third at last month's US Open Championships as he competed at 125 kg.

Whiting, who intends to compete at 174 pounds for the Golden Gophers, transferred to Minnesota last month after two years competing at 184 pounds for Missouri where he posted a 25-5 overall record. This past season as a redshirt freshman, Whiting went 10-3 overall, including an 8-3 record in duals. Five of his wins were by major decision, three were by tech fall, and he added one by pin. As a true freshman in 2022-23, Whiting went 15-2 with one win by fall and one by tech fall. He competed in six open tournaments, winning three titles and sharing a fourth.

MINNEAPOLIS
- The NCAA Tuesday announced the 47 at-large selections for next week's 2024 NCAA Wrestling Championships in Kansas City, Mo., including Minnesota's Michael Blockhus, Bennett Tabor and Tyler Wells.

The Gopher trio joins the seven members of the team who automatically qualified for the national tournament at last weekend's Big Ten Championships. It's the first time the team is sending 10 participants to NCAAs since 2013.

It'll be the fourth trip to the NCAA championships for Blockhus in his career, while Tabor and Wells will be going for the first time.

An All-American a year ago at 149 pounds, Blockhus got the call Tuesday after a standout season at 157 pounds. The sixth-year senior is 15-3 overall on the year, including a 12-1 dual record and perfect 8-0 mark in Big Ten duals. He went 0-2 at Big Tens, though he required medical attention in his opening match and that was followed by an injury default. Entering the weekend, Blockhus had won 10 straight matches, including six wins over ranked opponents, highlighted by wins over the then-No. 2 and 3 wrestlers in the country. This will be the fourth trip of his career to the NCAA championships.

A redshirt sophomore, Tabor joins the heavyweight field with a 20-7 record. He was 9-4 in duals and 5-3 against the Big Ten during the regular season. Tabor also took home heavyweight titles at the Soldier Salute and Bison Open. He is coming off a 1-2 weekend as he made his debut at the Big Ten championships.

Wells, a true freshman, is heading to the NCAAs in his first season in the Maroon and Gold. He is 13-6 on the season and was 6-3 in duals, including a 5-2 mark in Big Ten action. He had two wins over ranked opponents during the season, including a 5-2, overtime win over the eventual Big Ten champion, Dylan Shawver of Rutgers, in late January. Wells was 1-2 at the Big Tens, though his second loss was a medical forfeit.

Seedings and brackets for the 2024 NCAA Championships will be announced Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. CT, while the Championships take place March 21-23 inside the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Mo.

Football Recruiting ***EMMANUEL KARMO NOW A 4-STAR***

Karmo gets bumped up to a 5.8, four-star in the latest Rivals Rankings updates. Minnesota now has two four-star commits when you include quarterback Jackson Kollock. The Gophers class is now ranked 39th nationally

Are there any signs the offense will be more aggressive this year?

I’m ready to get more excited about our offense but when someone shows you who they are. We should believe them right?

But we did have an awesome offense a few years ago with Johnson & Bateman. I don’t remember being frustrated back then. Like I am now. Please advise. 55 is open for someone to encourage me. I’m always giving to this board. Today I need to take.
