Prediction- our offense will get Back to the future

This offense has tried to pivot too quickly with Athan as the star moving away from our traditional offense. I predict a more Tanner Morgan type approach moving forward. Darius Taylor will grind it out as our offense will be centered around him moving forward. We pass to keep the defense honest and if Athan gets hot. Let him do….what he does.

Also this approach is more of our identity and Evans will get more touches starting this week too. You heard it here first. 55 is so good.

Basketball PRESS RELEASE: Adel and Southworth Promoted within Gopher Men’s Basketball Program

Adel and Southworth Promoted within Gopher Men’s Basketball Program

MINNEAPOLIS – University of Minnesota head men’s basketball coach Ben Johnson has announced two promotions within his staff. Josh Adel has been promoted from video coordinator to assistant coach, while Collin Southworth has been promoted from recruiting coordinator to head video coordinator. Adel now joins Marcus Jenkins, Jason Kemp and Dave Thorson as coaches. The NCAA approved the addition of a fourth assistant this past summer.

“We’re thrilled to elevate Josh as an assistant coach and Collin as our head video coordinator,” Johnson said. "Josh is entering his 10th season with Gopher Basketball and has been an integral part of our program since 2013-14. We’re looking forward to bringing his skill set on the court with us in this expanded role. Since joining the program in 2021, Collin has been an invaluable resource as our recruiting coordinator. We’re excited to promote him in the head video coordinator role as he continues to improve our program.”

Adel enters his 10th season with Golden Gopher men’s basketball and third year as a part of Coach Johnson’s staff. Adel began his Gopher tenure as the operations director in 2013-14. He moved into the video coordinator role in 2014-15, where he prepared film and assisted with scouting reports. The 2023-24 season will mark his first year as an assistant coach. During his time at Minnesota, Adel was a part of Minnesota’s two NCAA appearances in 2017 and 2019 as well as NIT appearances in 2013 where the Gophers won the NIT championship.

Prior to his time at Minnesota, Adel spent the 2012-13 season at Florida International and five years with the Florida Gators. Adel began his stint with the Gators in 2007 and was promoted to head manager in August of 2009. As head manager, Adel was responsible for organizing the annual Gator Coaches Clinic. He also attended practices and assisted with the Florida scouting reports. During his time with UF, the Gators made three NCAA Tournament appearances, including two in the Elite Eight (2011 & 2012). Florida also advanced to the NIT Quarterfinals (2009) and the NIT Semifinals (2008).

Adel received a bachelor's degree in biology from Florida in 2012.

Southworth joined the Golden Gopher program in 2021 and came to Minnesota after a two-year stint at Olivet Nazarene University. At ONU, Southworth assisted with daily floor instruction and skill development as well as preparing film, scouting reports and recruiting. He was also the head coach of the junior varsity program in 2020-21.

Prior to his time at Olivet Nazarene, Southworth was a student assistant at Xavier from 2017-19. A Xavier student manager himself from 2016-17, Southworth was also an event operator with Hoop Group Academic Elite Camp from 2018-19.

Southworth graduated from Xavier in 2019 with a sports management degree. He went on to earn a master's degree at Olivet Nazarene University in organization leadership in May of 2021.

Battle of OCs named Jr.

Offense under Mike Sanford Jr. (2021):
- Rushing YPG: 162.0
- Passing YPG: 199.3
- Offensive YPG: 361.3
- PPG: 25.5 (83rd of 130)
- Rushing TDs: 27
- Passing TDs: 12
- Average PPG by defenses faced: 24.9 (54th of 130)
- QB: Tanner Morgan
- RBs: Ky Thomas, Bucky Irving, Trey Potts, and Bryce Williams (Mo injured game one)
- WRs: Chris Autman-Bell, Daniel Jackson, Mike Brown-Stephens, Dylan Wright
- TEs: Brevyn Spann-Ford and Ko Kieft

Offense under Greg Harbaugh Jr. (2023 - first half):
- Rushing YPG: 132.8
- Passing YPG: 180.5
- Offensive YPG: 313.3
- PPG: 21.7 (110th of 133)
- Rushing TDs: 8
- Passing TDs: 6
- Average PPG by defenses faced: 20.6 (39th of 130)
- Average PPG by defenses faced removing Michigan: 23.4 (56th of 133)
- QB: Athan Kaliakmanis
- RBs: Darius Taylor, Sean Tyler, Zach Evans, and Bryce Williams
- WRs: Chris Autman-Bell, Daniel Jackson, Corey Crooms, Elijah Spencer, Lemeke Brockington
- TEs: Brevyn Spann-Ford and Nick Kallerup

IMO, the most glaring difference between the 2021 squad and the 2023 squad is the offensive line. Yes, the 2021 squad was full of studs and the 2023 squad is still trying to figure it out. I have faith in Brian Callahan - he will continue to develop studs on the offensive front.

QB edge: 2023
RB edge: 2021 (2023 is close)
WR edge: 2023
TE edge: 2021
O-line edge: 2021

The biggest takeaway for me is the difference between the offensive YPG and total touchdowns. So far in 2023, we're averaging close to 50 yards less per game and have scored barely over a third of the total offensive touchdowns compared to 2021 despite being halfway through the year. This year's offensive playmakers aren't off the hook either - drops by pass catchers and bad/tipped throws coupled with hit or miss offensive line pass protection has not helped Harbaugh Jr.'s case.
