SWAG! Time for some much needed Gopher SWAG!

This season will be confirmation that our program is built. Wisconsin saw it and made their move quickly as they should have before they slide further behind. I think we’ve been down trodden for so long SWAG is a foreign concept to some of y’all old heads.

55 got SWAG, so he understands SWAG! Hang wit me if you need some SWAG! If you don’t understand the term SWAG, you’re old as hell so please ask your grandkids to define it. Because it’s time to get it…..SWAG!

Football Recruiting Fact or Fiction: The 2024 class will get Minnesota over the hump

I participated in today's Fact or Fiction. Gophers putting together a stellar 2024 class. Will it lead to Big Ten championships down the road?

B1G 2024 football commits

To date the Gophers lead the B1G in number of commits for 2024, with 23. They have more than double the numbers at 7 programs.

Here are the totals so far:

MN 23
MI 22
PSU 17
WI 16
OSU 14
RUT 14
NEB 13
IOWA 11
NW 10
MD 10
IND 9
ILL 9
PUR 9
MSU 5

I realize the number of recruits at this point in time doesn't mean everything, but it does mean something rather significant, together with the high ratio of in-state commitments (with 2 more possibles on the board). I think it's also noteworthy that the 3 programs right below us are traditional powers MI, OSU, and PSU.

Close strong Gophers!

Football Recruiting Saturday stuff

Some Saturday morning notes to pass along....

- The race for Wyatt Gilmore seems to be trending more and more towards Oklahoma. FutureCasts have been entered in the Sooners favor from our guys at OUInsider.com as well as others among the recruiting industry.

- The battle for Emerson Mandell appears to be a tight one. The in-state OL has taken officials to Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa State. Hearing it's more of a Gophers/Badgers battle right now, but also wouldn't rule out the Cyclones as well since they've been recruiting him for a while. Fleck vs. Fickell - interested to see who wins the street fight.

- Brett Carroll, another OL target, is wrapping up his June official schedule with Oklahoma State this weekend. He remains a viable option for the Gophers after his official. The three-star has also taken officials with Texas Tech and Illinois as well. It seems all four schools are on equal ground at the moment. Oklahoma State is the closest school to Carroll, but we're not not sure if that will play a big role in his decision.

- Staying with the OL theme, we have every reason to believe that Caleb Pyfrom will end up at Nebraska. He has taken officials with he Huskers, Minnesota, and is wrapping things up with Illinois this weekend. Matt Rhule is making a big push to lock down the top talent in the state of Nebraska and we've been told from reliable sources that Pyfrom is towards the top of their wish list.

- DE target Mason Carter is visiting Vanderbilt this weekend. However, he told us that Minnesota left a strong impression with him during last weekend's official with the Gophers. He's taken officials to Rutgers and Missouri as well. We've heard he's not a take for Missouri at this time, so we can rule them out. Stanford just came in with an offer, so not sure if that will have an influence on his recruiting process moving forward as he plans to make his college decision in mid-July.

- Minnesota also brought in Spain Park (Ala.) wide receiver Jonathan Bibbs last week for an official visit. He came into the visit without an offer and still doesn't have one post-visit either, but the Gophers are going to continue evaluating him as he's expected to be back for the Gophers' camp on July 29th in hopes of earning an offer and joining the class.

Wrestling: Gable Will Be Back for his Final Year of Eligibility!!!

New rules put in effect today for the 2023-24 season.

I like the 3 point takedown, it incentivizes offense, and makes the disparity between a takedown and escape more fair.

Here's the article from NCAA.org:

3-point takedown approved in wrestling

Rules change meant to incentivize offensive action

The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel on Thursday approved making all takedowns in wrestling worth 3 points, effective with the 2023-24 season.
Members of the Wrestling Rules Committee, which proposed the change, agreed that increasing the scoring for takedowns by an additional point will enhance the sport by rewarding offensive actions and risk-taking.

The committee also agreed there was a need to create a more appropriate point differential between takedowns and escapes and incentivize offense when competitors are in the neutral position.

Eliminating the hand-touch takedown also was approved by the panel. Rules committee members think demonstrating control is an important component of college wrestling, so it made sense to eliminate the hand-touch takedown in favor of a single requirement for all takedowns.

To help balance the new takedown scoring rule, there also are new requirements for the top wrestler to work toward a near fall or pin. A 3-point near-fall scoring component was added.

Previously, officials could award 2 or 4 points for near falls. The rationale for the rule change includes giving wrestlers a chance to be more creative in attempting to earn points.

Video review

Panel members also approved a change to the coach's video review request.
The rule change provides the referee with the authority to confirm or overturn all calls or missed calls during a video review challenged sequence. For coach's challenges, the sequence is described as the time from the alleged error until the match is, or should have been, stopped by the referee.

Other rule changes

  • The first medical forfeit of a tournament will count as a loss on the wrestler's record. An exception will be if the medical forfeit occurs immediately after an injury default in a tournament.
  • The penalty for a delayed coach's video review challenge request will be changed to a loss of the video review. Previously, it was a control-of-mat violation and 1-point deduction from the team total.
  • Any true placement matches conducted in an event will not alter the final team score.
  • Officials can let action continue after penalizing an illegal hold and not require a stoppage after imminent scoring finishes when the safety of wrestlers is not in danger.
  • The current mandatory five-second count for the waist and ankle ride will be expanded to include all situations in which the top wrestler grasps the bottom wrestler's ankle.
  • Weigh-in times across all competition types will be standardized to two hours or sooner before the start of competition. Previously, tournament weigh-ins were two hours or sooner, but dual meet weigh-ins were permitted only one hour or sooner before the start of competition.
  • Weight certification for all schools will be permitted to start Sept. 1.
The rule limiting facial hair to no longer than half an inch has been eliminated.
