If you were born in the 60’s....

And especially if you grew up in Minnesota, you have to read StingRay Afternoons, the great book by Steve Rushin. Got it for Christmas and read it in about 4 days. Fantastic memoir of growing up in the 70’s. If you don’t know Rushin, he grew up in Bloomington and became a writer for SI. The book is hilarious but also quite poignant. Can’t rec it enough. If you read it let me know what you think. Fun fact: he’s married to Rebecca Lobo; they have a pretty good podcast called Ball & Chain.

New redshirt rule likely to pass this year; the new transfer rule not so much

It sounds like the new redshirt rule is going to pass
By Zach Barnett -
January 18, 2018

AFCA executive director Todd Berry laid out the organization’s legislative agenda in a press conference to close the convention last week, and over the hour-long session Berry saved his strongest stance for his campaign to change the redshirt rule.

The new rule would allow players to play in up to four games — any four games — and retain their redshirt.

Berry said this vote has been unanimous across all levels two years in a row, which never happens. “This needs to pass and it needs to pass right now,” Berry said.

It sounds as if Berry — and the coaches he represents — are going to get their wish.

Mitch Sherman of ESPN polled stakeholders involved and found a similar level of support at the administrative and student-athlete level. He wrote:

This week at the NCAA convention, student-athletes and administrators voiced approval for the proposal, which previously received the widespread endorsement of coaches.

The appeal is obvious. A coach battling depth issues wouldn’t be faced with the Sophie’s Choice of shortening a player’s career by one year just to get through a single game or exposing a tired player to injury in order of preserving a younger player’s redshirt. Those situations are unfair for all involved and there’s no reason not to change them.

“I don’t think it’s right for a young man to lose a redshirt over what may be a need for a team, in a competitive situation, to have to find a player to play,” Miami AD Blake James told ESPN.

Of course, this being the NCAA, that didn’t stop some from dreaming up fantasy scenarios in order to fear-monger.

Here’s Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby: “I think it’s got a lot of merit,” Bowlsby said, “but there are some hooks in it. I don’t know how comfortable people are with, suddenly in the last three games and a bowl game, you go from being a guy who’s on the scout team to [a prominent role].”

Changing the rule will have wide-ranging competitive implications, though. Think of the coach juggling a quarterback derby. Now, instead of making an educated guess on the last day of training camp of whether the true freshman is really ready to overtake the fourth-year junior for the starting quarterback job, now he can extend the competition through the first third of the season without gambling the freshman’s redshirt away.

Or, in the most cited example, West Virginia running back freshman running back Marcell Pettaway can come off the bench as a band-aid while WVU’s veteran running backs nurse injuries — as he did in Week 13 of 2015 — without losing a year for being a team player.

The new rule can’t become official until April, when the Division I Council — which James, quoted above in support of the rule — chairs.

Elsewhere, it sounds as if the proposal to allow a 1-time chance for players to transfer within FBS without sitting out a year is officially dead, at least for this year.

Blow this thing up!

I can’t take the total lack of defense anymore. This is total ineptitude.

I see very little hope that Pitino can turn this around. I think there is too big of a black cloud over him and this team.

I wouldn’t blame Murphy for wanting to test the waters. If he leaves, and with Mason gone, it’s gonna be brutal to watch. Even with Oturu.

Every win from here forward will be a battle and we’ll have to shoot lights out to win. I fully expect a blowout loss in Madison, and that should seal it.

Time to get someone to come here that might actually be able to successfully recruit our backyard and not blow it by missing out on guys like Macura and Wright that should have and would have been Gophers.

position changes

it is almost that season.

so it begs the questions, when was the last time MN had a TRUE position change that was dynamic, a game changer for team or player? often the change is due to the fact that we are thin at a position and/or experiment where they are just trying to find a spot for a player to somehow find himself or somehow contribute

i know that there have been some changes on the DL and there are OLBs that find themselves in a rush package. i am looking for that clear position change that slaps us along the head, and says "of course" this is a impactful change. maybe something like when Mike Sherels went from running the ball to MLB? that was slightly ;) impactful. wasnt there also some position change for Marcus Sherels?

come on historians, help us out.

cheers.

Gosh, I hope we maintain our recruiting success in Georgia

With the loss of Mo Linguist, I hope we maintain momentum in Georgia... I lived down there before moving to Ohio and they are as crazy about football as Ohioans...I think the DEPTH in that state is even better than Ohio now and we need to maintain our presence for sure. I know we will but we need the RIGHT person to recruit down there to recruit hard against the 'big boys'.

There are areas that I feel we have to maintain in order to recruit at a high level.
Of course, Florida, Texas, and Ohio should be part of that regardless of the coaching staff.. But I see these spots as becoming essential to maintain and build relationships outside of Minnesota:

Besides those 3 major states and Minnesota, these are ones I would love to see a consistent presence for years to come.
- GEORGIA, GEORGIA, GEORGIA
-Chicago metro and outlying areas
-Michigan with Fleck's reputation
-St Louis metro and outlying areas
-Indianapolis metro and surrounding areas as they are improving in quality players produced
-Alabama
-North Carolina and maybe South Carolina as well.
-Steal a few from Pennsylvania, especially some of their QBs

Georgia will always be recruited hard by Georgia, Georgia, Tech, Auburn, Alabama, Clemson, and South Carolina....Tennessee, Florida, and Florida State as well. That has been true for probably the last 50 years... But there are enough players that can play in Georgia(plus maybe we beat out the big boys for a top Georgia player once in a while) that we should be able to get 4-5 good players out of that state every year, at least. Of course we get Minnesota's best.. Hopefully North and South Dakota's as well as steal a recruit or 2 from Iowa or Wisconsin.

I actually think that Clemson, Alabama, Georgia, and Auburn have enough of a national profile that it COULD work to our advantage... Hopefully some great HS players elsewhere will consider those programs that are outside their home states where it would open up recruiting for some great players in the area to go to schools like Minnesota... Plus if they put a lot of great classes, back to back, we could possibly sell playing time early where those other programs have great players waiting in the wings before the next recruiting classes sign... I just hope that Linguist leaving does not affect any recruiting momentum we have so this post may be irrelevant if that is the case... But I would consider recruiting Georgia as much of a priority as recruiting Florida or Texas. I read in another thread that Warinner may consider leaving so if that is the case, I hope Fleck on his own or another keeps 'their foot on the gas' here in Ohio to get top recruits in the future.

Penn State loses asst to Bama

SEC, FSU, taking a lot of BIG coaching talent this cycle.

This guy was a top recruiter, wr coach/passing game coordinator.

Franklin lost his OC to the Ole Miss HC job, Morehead took RB coach and some PSU off field staff guys with him.
