The U declares Santa, wrapped gifts and holiday colors are not approrpriate

Liberalism is a mental disorder.

Some faculty and student employees at the University of Minnesota who attended a recent event to discuss religious diversity during the holiday season received a memo listing a number of items the school deems “not appropriate” for public gatherings or displays at the school, The College Fix reported.

The memo specifically pointed to items and colors that are associated with Christmas and Hanukkah, such as Christmas trees, wrapped gifts, and bows.

What’s the story?
The College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences passed out a memo with its “recommended” ideas at its event titled, “Dean’s Dialogues: Respecting Religious Diversity in CFANS and at the University.”

According to the event listing on the website, the students and faculty at the university represent more than 300 religious or spiritual belief systems.

“Our religious/spiritual beliefs and practices can play a key role in our identity but can be ‘off limits’ for discussion especially in public spaces,” the listing said.

The school and its leadership are “committed to an inclusive community,” according to the website.

University of Minnesota spokeswoman Emma Bauer told The College Fix that the memo was to be considered a “conversation piece to facilitate dialogue” at the inclusion event.

“It was not distributed broadly to [College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences] employees. It does not reflect current University of Minnesota, EOAA (Office of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action) or CFANS official guidance,” Bauer said.

The U of M (@UMNews) shared this letter with some faculty and student employees this week The colors red & green, blue & white/silver are verboten during the "winter celebration" period. Images of Santa, wrapped gifts, and bells are also deemed "religious iconography." #BahHumbug

\8:00 PM - Dec 13, 2017

What else was on the list of ‘not appropriate’ items for gatherings and displays?
• Santa Claus
• Angels
• Star of Bethlehem
• Dreidels (four-sided top played with during Hanukkah)
• Nativity scene
• Menorah
• Bells
• Doves
• Red and green or blue and white/silver decoration themes

Were there other recommendations?
• Consider neutral-themed parties such as “winter celebration.”

• Keep the theme of any invitations neutral and non-religious and not reflective of any one religious holiday.

• Decorations, music, and food should be general and not specific to any one religion. Also, be mindful of dietary restrictions and provide alternatives.

What else?
The memo said the office of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action would provide “additional support and problem solving” for those who reach out against “inappropriate religious celebrations.”

Complaints about violations can be made using the “Bias Incident Website,” the memo said.

Scouting Report: Erik Gibson

Erik Gibson:

Strengths:

· Big bodied, physical receiver. 6’2” 195 on Rivals
· Great ball skills. Consistently high-points the ball and wins 1v1 battles down the field. Does an excellent job of using his frame to box out defensive backs, then going up and getting the ball
· Downfield threat
· Run blocking. Punishing run blocker that showed effort and willingness to block on the edge

Weaknesses:

· Speed. Not as quick as say Bateman or Manns
· Defined route running. Most of the routes shown were fades and slants, so he’ll need to be able to become a savvy route runner, especially since he’s not extremely quick

Gibson’s style of play reminded me of Laquon Treadwell. While he isn’t exactly a burner, he’s a big bodied receiver that utilizes his frame well to win 1v1 battles, especially down the field. Also, I enjoyed his willingness to block on the edge since that is rarely seen from wide receivers. The Gophers have lacked down the field threats in recent years, so I believe he’ll be a starter down the road. He may see playing time next year, depending on how quickly he comes along.

I realize articles about committed recruits illustrate their best qualities, but

my goodness do I like ALL of our committed players, not only as footballers, but also as men. Coupled with the MANY quality lettermen already on the team, it's gonna be impossible to not feel some pride while watching our squad take the field next year.

I know all of us want to have a dream recruit class that's Top 10 someday (maybe it'll happen eventually), but I'll take a Top 30/35 class of Grade A, top notch people that also happen to excel on the field as well. While they all may not have individual, NFL Scout-drooling attributes, I firmly believe a cohesive group of excellent players that develop together and are on the same page (dare I say row the boat together), can take us to heights I've never seen in my lifetime.

When it's Dec. 20, and all the ink is dried with everyone who is currently committed firmly on board, this Gopher fan will be ecstatic knowing that I can cheer not only for the excellent play on the field, but excellent men serving our community off it.

Scouting Report: Bryce Williams

Bryce Williams:

Strengths:

· Great feet. Doesn’t slow down at all with his cuts. He has these subtle little cuts like Shannon Brooks that don’t look like much, but throw off defenders
· Plays fast. It may sound obvious, but there are a lot of players who run a fast 40-yard dash that don’t play fast on the field. Bryce plays fast
· Vision. He showed consistent ability to hit cutback lanes and find the open running lane. Of the two running backs, he will be the home run hitter

Weaknesses:

· Not any pass-catching highlights or blocking, so unaware of his abilities in those areas

As a runner, there’s a lot to like about Bryce as a running back. I had a hard time finding weaknesses. He’s elusive, has excellent vision, and is a home run threat when he has the ball. I didn’t see him catch any passes or block, so those are areas that will have to be discovered. He also has pretty good size, listed at 6’0”. Nolan Edmonds may have a slight better chance to play early because he’s more physically ready, but I see no reason why Williams can’t be a solid Big Ten RB.

Looking ahead

Taking a gander at the roster and where potential holes are in the future and there a few spots that jump out. We lose Huff at S next year and are left with Handy Holly, Winfield and Aune as schollie players. There has been talk of Aune moving to LB in the future, hope we don't need him next year. We also have Swenson who played a decent amount this year. Safety will be a big focus in the next class, probably 2 guys and 1 maybe a JUCO.

Next position that jumps out is LB! We lose Huff and Cashman after next year and will head into 2019 with Martin, Carter and Barber as SRs and the other schollie guys are Guthrie, Sori-Marin, Rush Oliver. I could see 2 LBs in next year's class

TE; while we don't lose anyone next year (hopefully), Beebe and Witham will be SRs and we saw quite a bit of 2 TE looks this year.

Gopher Basketball Weekly with Richard Pitino 12/13

Really fun interview to listen to. I enjoy listening to Richard. He's very honest and breaks things down well. Here's a link: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/gophers-on-demand-28275888/

Richard in particular said this game worried him due to finals being around the corner, playing four games in eight days, and he wasn’t sure the fans were going to be into it. Once shots weren’t falling, it started affecting the team defensively.

Jordan Murphy in the postgame said it felt like they were playing with the weight of the world on their shoulders. Richard responded, “We had two really good wins early, and then your ranked in the Top 15 and everyone thinks you’re all this. Last year we were a five seed and we were fourth in the Big Ten. We were ranked for like a day last year. It’s hard for our guys to deal with all these things, and then when they drop out of the Top 25 that you’re a bit out of it. I think there was a bit of fatigue mentally that set in that they had to push through.”

The team played much harder and shot better in the second half, now with five practices to get ready again before playing Oral Roberts. “Last year after 12 games, nobody thought we were any good. It was just the guys in the locker room. When we were good, when it was fun, it was about the right things. We have to get back to that.”

The loss of Akeem Springs and Eric Curry have proved to be big for this Gophers team. Richard also had an interesting comment about the team feeling like they are failing, letting down fans by not playing up to expectations. “We’re 12 games in, there’s 20 games left. We need to get the weight off our shoulders and play together.” Also gave credit to Nebraska and Arkansas as being extremely tough environments to play in.

On the bench unit, there is a lack of production from that unit. The team needs to be able to go to the bench when the starters get tired. Davonte Fitzgerald and Jamir Harris were two players Richard mentioned that need to be able to come in and not make mistakes. He credited Michael Hurt, Isaiah Washington, and Bakary as guys that can be productive without doing much.

Davonte Fitzgerald hasn’t played in two years, so he needs to string together some good stretches to get his confidence back.

Coach overall is pleased with the way the non-conference schedule has worked. The wins versus Providence and Alabama will be resume boosters, and the Arkansas was a home-and-home where they played at our arena last year, we won, and it helped our resume. The one that coach wanted back was Miami at home. “If we can continue to learn from these games, and play our best basketball in mid to late January, that’s what it’s all about.”

Pitino reiterated that this team is different than last year. “Akeem Springs and Eric Curry are very good players; our bench is very inexperienced. I thought we were great at Providence. I thought Alabama we were great for 30 minutes. Nebraska let their physical play affect us, and Arkansas is a tough place to play.”

Pick and roll defense has been an issue for this team as well as on-ball pressure. Coach believes it’s about mentality for this team right now.

“I think our fans are great. They are not a happy fan base right now. Everybody has to take a step back, deeming us already a disappointment. We’ve beaten two NCAA tournament teams. We’re sitting at 9-3, I’d like to get that Miami game back, but we’re not as big a disappointment as people think.”

On Jordan Murphy, “A lot of people were pegging him for Player of the Year eight games in, which is a bit unfair to him. He’s producing at a ridiculous rate. There’s still things I think he can improve upon. Reggie (Lynch) and him can now expect traps, so we have to continue to work on them passing out of double teams. “

An important point that Pitino wanted to address was fans booing the players throughout the game. While he doesn’t want to lecture fans, he wants to show that booing college athletes, especially during the game, has a negative impact on the players. “We’re not playing super well, we know that. During Miami we were down four on our home court, wait until after the game to boo. For college athletes, that affects those guys. College guys are going to get affected more than Jimmy Butler or Karl-Anthony Towns. Should the players be playing better? Absolutely. If the fans want to boo me after, that’s totally fine. I understand frustration, and I want the fans to help fuel us.”

Michael Hurt and Gaston are two players by name that Richard as two players that have shown some good things for the team off the bench. The best shooter on the team, per Pitino, is Jamir Harris. Once he learns the system and knows where he has to be offensively/defensively, he’ll be terrific.

Daniel Oturu rolled his ankle the other week, but it looks to be minor and shouldn’t affect him long term. Oturu, Jarvis Omersa, and Gabe Kalscheur are three recruits that Coach is extremely excited about.

Kansas, Duke, Gonzaga are a few teams Richard named that he enjoys watching from a coaching standpoint to pick from other teams.

“I thought last game Isaiah (Washington) really figured out that he doesn’t have to shoot 10 times a game. He’s starting to make better decisions. Jamir (Harris) is starting to get there, and I think Davonte (Fitzgerald) will too.”

Track times

looking at incoming recruits:

Terell Smith is the highlight with a 10.39 100 meter State Championship run...also a 20.84 200 meters shows up in his profile; on a 42.14 4 by 100...that 10.39 is ELITE...Myrick kind of speed

Manns was anchor on a 4 by 100 that went 42.77 for 12th in Ohio State Meet... his 22'5" long jump...any kid that jump over 22' is elite...his straight 100 times are only in 11.7 range...

Aune has some nice numbers...15.3 110 hurdles (compare Shenault 14.1), has a 6'3" hj, just under 45' tj.

Bryce Williams had an 11.55 as a freshman.

Braelen Oliver had a 22.7 200 in Spring...21'4" long jump...nice numbers for a line backer
