This is what will happen for Flecks 4 years as Gophers HC

He inherits a 9-4 team that beat a very good Washington State team the year before with an injury and suspension riddled team.

Year 1 he complains the team isn’t good. They win 5 games to teams they would have beat with any coach and get absolutely embarrassed in their 7 losses.

Year 2 will be way way uglier than the 7 losses they had in Year 1. A 2-10 or 3-9 record is coming

Year 3. An improvement. Fans will be hoping for a bowl game and will say the program is on the rise. They end up 6-6 or 7-5 and go to a boring bowl game that no one cares about but will act excited about.

Year 4. The team will go 9-4. Exactly where they were when Fleck took over and whined about the program he took over. He then will be rumored to take an average to above average SEC or ACC school. And he will take it.

Same story. Different author. Wake me up in 2021.

Inside Gopher Athletics with Mark Coyle: An Early Start for Big Ten Basketball

INSIDE GOPHER ATHLETICS: AN EARLY START FOR BIG TEN BASKETBALL

By Mark Coyle

We were all reminded what a magical place Williams Arena is last night when our men's basketball team battled a top-10 opponent in front of a raucous, sold out crowd. While we all would have preferred to see a win, fans were treated to a tough, hard-fought game between two great teams. I can't thank the fans who packed the Barn last night enough for the energy they brought to the building, and the support they showed Coach Pitino and our students.

With Wednesday's game now in the books, our team will now dip into Big Ten play with a home game against Rutgers on Sunday and a road contest against Nebraska on Tuesday. These games mark a start to the conference season several weeks earlier than previous years. They're also a sneak peek at how our men's basketball schedules will look in the future.

Two months ago, the Big Ten shared that it will move to a 20-game conference schedule for men's basketball starting next season and that early December Big Ten basketball will be a standard part of our schedule moving forward.

Adding two games to league play is a positive for everyone involved, particularly fans, who are now guaranteed another quality home game each season with the addition of another Big Ten opponent. This expanded schedule will also better protect regional rivalries, such as ours with Wisconsin and Iowa. In this new format, we will play these teams 10 times each in every six-year window, and will host each of them five times in those six seasons.

Though still an 18-game schedule this year, we will get our first taste of early December conference games this Sunday. The move up was necessary due to the Big Ten men's basketball tournament moving up a week this year.

After the experience our fans provided for our men's basketball program on Wednesday night, I hope we can usher in a new tradition, our Big Ten opener in early December, in the same fashion. I look forward to seeing many of you at the Barn for Sunday evening's game against Rutgers.

This absurdity needs it's own thread.

On the day the 2nd woman accused Franken....the Strib prints a story right under the Franken story....with the headline blaring "GOP yada-yada...."....about a Texas STATE congressman being accused of having an affair. As if a STATE legislator from Texas has anything to do with Minnesota. And as if "GOP" needed to be the first word in the headline.

Just stop and take a moment to think of the absurdity of this. Reverse it. Let's say where I used to live, Champlin MN....let's say my state legislator from Champlin had an affair. Can you imagine that being a front-page headline story in the top newspaper in Texas?

That audacity of the Stib. And the blatant disrespect for their audience. They must think their audience is so dumb that they won't notice how stupid that is.

BB Observations vs. Miami

- Washington shooting 17 shots is not good. He was better towards the end, but also had five TOs and 4 PFs. Would have liked to see Mason bringing the ball up instead.
- Murphy dominated in the first half and seemed pretty quiet in the 2nd half. I know they were double-teaming him a lot, but needed him more down the stretch.
- Coffey had a great game. Easily the MVP for the game and had an amazing shot from his seat a la Hoffarber.
- We're really going to miss Lynch next year. Finished with 12 points, 10 rebs., and 7 blocks. He also only had 1 PF, which is impressive.
- We had ZERO points from our bench on 0-1 shooting. McBrayer not playing was a big loss. This could be a major issue throughout the season.
- Our 3-point shooting is a concern. Coffey seems like the only reliable shooter there.
- Miami made big shots the whole game and our defense didn't seem too bad. Definitely some 3s that were too open. D. Vasiljevic was a thorn in our side for a stretch going 3-5 from 3. They ended up 10-25 from 3. Continues to be a concern.
- We didn't cause enough turnovers (8).
- Huell killed us with tons of dunks. Pick and roll defense questionable?
- A few calls down the stretch hurt us. Missed call against Murphy on offensive rebound and Washington out of bounds when it looked like he was in are a few that come to mind.

French President Macron says gender-based insults will become a crime, punishable by law

French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday unveiled measures aimed at educating the public and schoolchildren about sexism and violence against women and improving police support for victims.

During his campaign Macron, who won the presidential election in May, promised to rethink sexual politics and gender equality, which he made a national cause for his five-year mandate.

The Harvey Weinstein scandal in the United States has accelerated a rethink of attitudes towards sexual harassment in France, a country that cherishes its self-image as the land of seduction and romance.

"Let's seal a pact of equality between men and women," Macron said in a speech marking the International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women.

About violence and sexual abuse, he said: "It is essential that shame changes camp."

"Gender-based insults will be punishable by law. Offenders will face a deterrent fine," he added.

During his speech, Macron observed a minute's silence for the 123 women killed by their partner or ex-partner in 2016.

Measures announced include educating secondary school children about pornography and simplifying the system for rape and assault victims to go to the police.

Proposals that could be included in a 2018 draft law include criminalising street harassment and extending the statute of limitation for the rape of minors to 30 years from 20 years. Macron also said he was personally in favour of setting the age of sexual consent at 15. Currently France has no minimum age for sexual consent.

Planned changes to the police system include allowing victims of rape and sexual assault to make their initial complaints online, before going to a police station to bring criminal charges. Other measures include "on demand" bus stops, where women can stop a bus anywhere at night so they can get home safely.

French feminist group Osez le Féminisme said the measures were going in the right direction but must be accompanied by adequate funding.

"Without funding, any communication, training, awareness or help plan for the victims will be useless," the statement said.

France has often debated sexual harassment over the past decade following scandals involving French politicians.

Six years ago a sex scandal forced former finance minister Dominique Strauss-Kahn to resign as head of the International Monetary Fund, provoking a round of soul-searching in France about sexual abuse that goes undetected in the upper echelons of power.

Getting separation

As a former offensive lineman, the term "getting separation" as applied to wide receivers is confusing to me. My thought is that the defense so disregards the abilities of the opposition that D-backs press the WRs and leaves the QB few options in the pass game.

What are the nuances of "getting separation" that I don't understand? Is it lack of respect for the WRs? Is it sloppy route running? Is it DBs being more physical at the line of scrimmage? Is it lack of physicality in the establishing of running the route on the WRs?

Please help me understand.

I am going to put this out there...and I mean no Ill will to anyone

Every year transfers happen. It happens on EVERY team.

We are getting a couple next year. One from Florida and the other from Alabama.

That said, the guys who are leaving are opening up spots for better players.

Look at the offers the players that are leaving had. I wish them the best of luck at their future schools, but they probably should not have been recruited to a P5 school in the 1st place.

Like Fleck or not, we are getting players that other P5 schools offered as well. Kill got a few, but a few doesn't cut it in today's game.

I could give 2 craps about the stars. I want to see the real legit offers a player has. The guys leaving are being replaced by better players. It is what it is.

Again, I am not bad mouthing anyone and I hope the players leaving can find a great place to call home.

All Conference vs. Conference Wins

Assumptions: 1. Coaches selections; 2. 1st to 3rd teams; 3. Conference wins. The data indicates good players win Big Ten conference games. Data also indicates Michigan and Indiana under performed and Purdue over performed.

Team. Conf. All Conf
Wisconsin. 9. 12
Ohio State. 8. 13
Northwestern. 7. 9
Penn State. 7. 6
Michigan State. 7. 4

Coaching Carousel

i know a lot of folks are down on Fleck and Co today, but he was “the” hot coach in last year’s cycle and the Gophers got him.

If we had waited one year and were looking this year along with 4 SEC schools, Nebraska, ASU and others what priority/caliber of coach would we have gotten?

Getting shut out twice in a row sucks, and I’m sad, but I haven’t jumped ship yet. The future may still be bright. Let’s give it a few more seasons.

RUSH AND REIGELSPERGER ARE DIVISION 1 all state players..and a first in Ohio ever

Tommy Rush and Alex Reigelsperger were all state players in division 1 for Ohio High School.. The Division 1 team was revealed about an hour ago. Rush, a LB from Marysville(northwest of Columbus) was 2nd team all state in Ohio... He played on an average team but he camped fantastic last summer.. I think that James Franklin gave PJ Fleck a "heads up" on this kid after a Penn State camp as I dont think the Nittany Lions had any room for him at the LB spot for their team. Fleck offered and Rush committed... I hear with better players around him, he could be a good playmaker.. May need to gain a little weight.

Reigelsperger was 3rd team all state as a DE from Huber Heights Wayne(northeast of Dayton). Got a lot of upside so he is one to watch..

FIRST TIME EVER IN OHIO......MR FOOTBALL.......Joey Baughman who is a QB at Wadsworth HS( a town and school just west of Akron) won the award..... Baughman is a DIvision 1 college WRESTLING RECRUIT at University of Virginia .He will be the first Ohio HS MR FOOTBALL to NOT play college football...Very interesting but he had some huge stats as a QB so he deserves it as much as anyone.

Wrap your mind around this.... Brennan Armstrong is going to Virginia as a scholarship QB from Ohio yet on Virginia's wrestling team, Baughman is also from Ohio as Mr Football at the QB position in the same graduating class.... Kinda weird that 2 kids from Ohio are going to Virginia that were both QBs in the same class, yet the MR FOOTBALL is the one NOT playing on a D1 football scholarship.
