Main points from postgame presser

Tracy Claeys
  • Doing fine, we've been in close games.
  • Putting such an emphasis on stopping the run just drains you. It's tough when you can't get off the field.
  • Don't hit quarterbacks in practice so that allowed Leidner to get reps during the week.
  • Wide receivers ran into each other on the pick six.
  • Coverage teams gave us good field position
  • Need to work on our cadence. Offensive line wasn't necessarily to blame for not being able to convert on third and short.
  • "There's no such thing as a bad win."
  • "Nothing to add" on University's statement about the restraining orders.
  • The wide receivers got some separation but there were drops and underthrown balls.
  • Lingen's dealing with a foot injury, Calhoun's still dealing with his turf toe, Wright is dealing with a tendon in his knee.
  • Will keep going for it on fourth and short situations.'
Mitch Leidner
  • It's been an interesting process working back from the concussion, lots of up and downs. Last week was tough. A concussion is not something you can really just play through.
  • There was no change in energy after the 21-3 lead. Everyone was passionate and playing hard.
  • Quite a few times where I changed the play at the line and it usually worked.
Damarius Travis
  • Knew about Rescigno going in. He looked good on film.
Emmit Carpenter
  • Has worked on few different things with technique and that's caused the two recent misses. Plant foot has been too deep.
  • Ryan Santoso has offered a lot of help, has done a good job mentoring. Still in contact with Peter Mortell, who talks him through some of the mental aspects of the game.
  • Claeys wants kickoffs to go in the left corner.

Mitch Leidner might start Saturday + other notes

- Leidner might start on Saturday. He just has one more step to get past in the concussion protocol. Claeys sounded pretty optimistic but also made it sound like he'll need to get reps to play, and said there's a chance he wouldn't start if he is ready.

- The Big Ten has required teams to schedule a power five team in every team's non-conference schedule. The Big Ten is allowing Fresno State (and a bunch of other MWC and several others) to count as a power five team, which is why scheduling Georgia State (which was announced today) is allowed.

- Gophers are looking to schedule BYU in the future.

- No update or clarity given on the Carlton Djam and Tamarion Johnson situation.

Under center

What do we do next year?

Rhoda for one year?
Croft or Green ready?
Williams?

Go recruit a top notch JUCO QB?

The offense may be better at all positions next year after only graduating Pirsig, Wolitarsky and Leidner. QB is the key next year to what should have a very good supporting cast. Seems like the perfect opportunity for a JUCO All-American to be handed the keys.

Here's the latest article from the Star T. It's a pretty good read and fair I think. Some of the comments at the end are what you would expect from joe public, that have never been to a Gopher game.
Sometimes when I read things like this, I think maybe we have fallen into the we can't get a better mode. And we settle for what we have had for the last 54 years.

If I was Mark Coyle I would bitch to Jim Delaney about a few things

Schedule:: East cross over games make no sense, the math is not tough to have them play the East teams more evenly.

Also, why do they not give Minny a week off when the B10 SEASON starts for a number of years

B10 Network. When the B10 Network started they were suppose to re-run ALL the B10 games during the week, either in full or in 60 minutes. WRONG, they only had one game of Minny's all year.

M Club Hall of Fame class

Press release:

In a packed DQ Club Room at TCF Bank Stadium on Thursday night, 11 former Gopher student-athletes officially took their place in the University of Minnesota’s “M” Club Hall of Fame at the varsity alumni club’s annual induction ceremony. Each of these 11 are now among 345 student-athletes representing 27 different sports in the Hall of Fame.

“The University of Minnesota is a special place for my family and me. It’s a special place for a lot of people,” said Athletics Director Mark Coyle in his remarks to open the event. “All of you in this room tonight, letterwinners and hall-of-famers, you are the reason this is such a special place to so many people. That is your legacy and I’m honored to be here tonight to celebrate that legacy with you.”

In addition to the 11 inductions, emcee Dave Lee also had the privilege of introducing Dick Mattson, who was awarded the Distinguished Service Award for his 48 years working for Gopher Athletics, and Dick Jonckowksi, who was awarded an Honorary Letter for his three-decade career as a public address announcer, primarily for Gopher men’s basketball and baseball.

This year's class of inductees, which featured student-athletes from 10 different sports and six different decades, included:
  • Greg Eslinger (Football) - Two-time consensus First Team All-American, 2005 Outland Trophy (nation's best interior lineman) and Rimington Trophy (nation's best center) recipient.
  • Dave Gumlia (Men's Golf) - The program's first two-time All-American and a key player on Minnesota's 1963 Big Ten championship team.
  • Tim Harrer (Men's Hockey) - First Team All-American and WCHA Player of the Year; only person to score 50 or more goals in a season in program history.
  • Amber Hegland (Softball and Women's Hockey) - Four-time All-Big Ten, All-American, holds program's career batting average record. Recorded 35 points in 36 games in one season playing hockey.
  • MaryAnne Kelley (Women's Gymnastics) - Three-time All-American and First Team All-Big Ten; second Gopher gymnast ever named Big Ten Gymnast of the Year (2002).
  • Jared Lawrence (Wrestling) - Individual national champion and four-time All-American, one of just six wrestlers in program history to accomplish both.
  • Howard Nathe (Baseball) - All-Big Ten as both a pitcher and an outfielder; helped Minnesota win 1960 national title by playing both positions.
  • Pat Neu (Wrestling) - National champion during a 44-6 senior season; two-time Big Ten finalist.
  • Al Nuness (Men's Basketball) - Two-time All-Big Ten player and the first African-American, full-time coach at the University of Minnesota.
  • Clay Strother (Men's Gymnastics) - Four-time individual national champion and 11-time All-American; competed for Team USA at the 2006 World Championships.
  • Jeff Wright (Football) - First Team All-Big Ten and program's single-game, single-season and career interceptions record co-holder; played seven season for the Minnesota Vikings.
The “M” Club remains one of the oldest and largest varsity alumni organizations in the country, with a history dating back more than a century. Its Hall of Fame reflects that extensive past and expansive membership. Inductees include student-athletes, coaches and administrators who wore the Maroon and Gold since the earliest days of Gopher Athletics in the 1880s.

The T. Denny Sanford Athletics Hall of Fame, which is located inside the John and Nancy Lindahl Premium Entrance at TCF Bank Stadium, features Gopher Athletics memorabilia from throughout the school's athletics history. Just inside the Hall of Fame doors, its membership has their names added to a wall honoring legends from all eras of Gopher Athletics. The public is welcome to visit the Hall of Fame before and after Gopher football games and during special events.

Rutgers Ticket Available

hi. I have 1ticket to the game on Saturday against Rutgers, but the only catch is you have to sit by me:):(. Good seats!

I have taken my Dad for years but he has progressed to the point where going to the games is too much for him. The others I've asked are busy with going somewhere due to MEA weekend.

So..... If you are interested in a ticket, but are willing and brave enough to sit next to me then respond here or private message me.

I'm a good guy honestly and several on here can vouch for me, I think. Just don't ask Bradt, umfb, Tundra, MJH, or OPD...

Favorite Individual Play by a Gopher in the Kill/Claeys Era

There have been a lot of fun moments and some big wins in the Jerry Kill coaching era here at Minnesota. With homecoming coming up this weekend, I thought it would be fun to reflect on the good times that have been had so far!

Personally, my favorite play has got to be the Briean Boddy-Calhoun game saving strip of De'Mornay Pierson-El right before the end zone to seal the win against Nebraska in Lincoln. It was such a huge play because it was a game that as Gopher fans, you half expect the team to let up a late score to lose a big game. When it mattered most, Boddy-Calhoun made the play and sent Minnesota to 8-3 on the season with a huge road victory and their first win in Lincoln in over 50 years.
