Claeys

I'm curious what the window looks like to make a long term decision and if the recruiting period should be taken into consideration for a fair assessment? It looks like the dead period starts on 12/12.

Claeys has won 1 B1G game so I would consider this season a tryout. I don't know how Coyle could justify an extension with another 2-6 B1G season.

My confidence level is pretty high we don't need to deal with that problem record-wise, but I'd like to see recruiting factored into the decision process as well. I get it, we win the West and all bets are off. It becomes no brainier.

Recruiting pace

2017: 7 verbals by July 20
2016: 9 verbals by July 20; 2 of these were the Daniels twins, who were never solid; 2 were Poljan and Kegel
2015: 7 verbals by July 20; Buford was #8 on July 20; Jaylen Waters #9 next day
2014: 5 verbals by July 20; this included Jeff Jones who was always shaky; Stelter on July 21
2013: 5 verbals by July 20; includes Hino, who was 2012 bounce back; Myrick #6 August 6
2012: 9 verbals by July 20; includes Hino; not other Miami guys; Fruechte was a bounce back juco;

staff on about same pace as they always have at Minnesota...this year probably the smallest open number of scholarships they've ever had Summer before signing

I am extremely concerned that the NCAA is considering abolishing the kickoff

I believe it would be disastrous for the game. If you eliminate kickoffs, then you've also eliminated onside kicks.

Without onside kicks, you are draining the drama out of a huge % of your close games.

Plus, it seems a little silly to get rid of the onside kick but maintain punting. Maybe the evidence says that the punt is a less injury prone play than the kickoff, but I would have to see the data to believe it.

In any case, does anybody know of a petition to keep the kickoff? And if not I think we should start one and pass it around all the major SB Nation blogs, Rivals, Scout, and 247 recruiting sites, etc.

Could take some grass roots activism to keep the kickoff.

Finally, if concussions are such a danger, then have teams kickoff from the 38 or the 40. That would drastically increase the # of touchbacks, thus eliminating a lot of potential injuries.

Jariah Tolbert Article

Minnesota has been in touch with former Nebraska Cornhusker receiver Jariah Tolbert and he attended camp last weekend in Minneapolis. I caught up with him to see where he is at in his recruitment. He is a three years to play three guy who played a year of junior college ball in 2015.
