Not a very long conversation, but always fun listening to Coach Fleck.

Fleck opened by saying he was “Elite”, per usual. He talked about his family loving Minnesota so far. It takes people a bit to come to Minnesota, but once you are here, you love it. He joked about having one neighbor, the Pitinos, that he’s “not sure about yet”.

PA questioned about Fleck’s coaching tactics when he sees a player make a mistake. As always, PJ described failure as growth. “Failing and quitting, that’s a problem. But failing and growing, that’s what we want to see.” PJ believes seeing failure is a natural part of the process of growing as a team, and that is what makes the success sweeter.

The players are working out with the strength coach for one more week, and then they get a short break before training camp. Coaches are still recruiting and have a junior day coming up where a lot of players will be on campus for unofficial visits. It is partly a relaxing time, and a training camp prep time.

PJ said the hours available to be with the players during the season and in the spring, are a lot different. The coaches are allowed much more time during camp/the season to be with the players. He also talked about making camp fun and exciting, so that players cannot wait to be there.

Paul inquired about what Fleck learned when he was in the pros. “It’s not how many reps you get, but it’s what you do with those reps.” PJ was not the most talented, but he beat out a lot more guys that were better than him because he was a lot tougher and worked harder.

A quarterback has not been decided yet, as the coaches have only seen these quarterbacks in winter workouts and 15 spring practices. “Mastery of the offense probably won’t happen until Year Two.” Mentioned Year One being a unique year. Putting quarterbacks in an advantageous position is key, especially in the first year. During training camp is when a quarterback will be decided.
