Strengths: active hands, short area quickness, athleticism
Weaknesses: leverage
Jacob Schuster is a 6’2”, 300-pound defensive tackle from Tumwater, WA. Schuster committed to the Gophers over offers from Michigan, Stanford, Washington, Cal, and Washington State among others. He currently carries a 5.5, 3-star ranking from Rivals and is the 12th ranked player in the state of Washington.
As a junior, Jacob was named Cascadia Prep 2A Player of the Year, TNT All-Area First Team Defensive Lineman, and the Seattle Times All-State Defensive Team. In 2019, he totaled 60 tackles, 26 TFLs, and 9.5 sacks.
What I was most impressed with after watching Schuster’s film is his hand usage on the defensive line, especially in pass rush situations. Jacob utilizes the swim move to near perfection to beat offensive lineman as well as displays multiple counter moves. Really impressed with how his athleticism and how well he moves for his size. Tumwater occasionally stands him up and will have him rush on the inside as well as on the outside to which he has success doing both.
Schuster displays above average explosiveness and power to pair with his finesse game which makes him a difficult defensive lineman for offenses to deal with. Can beat an offense in a number of different ways pending what he is needed to do.
His leverage can tend to get high to which puts him in tough situations that he has to spin out of to get back into the play. He is able to overcome at this level being much bigger/stronger than his high school counterparts, however, will need to learn to play lower at the collegiate level.
Overall, very impressed with Schuster from what I see. He has a finesse game as well as a power game to match and exceptional athleticism. As already a 300-pounder, I’m excited to see him get into a collegiate weight program where he can continue to develop his body and keep his quickness while adding strength. I project Jacob as a three-technique going forward where he can utilize his pass rush abilities against a single offensive lineman and come down the line in the run game.
