Strengths: sideline to sideline speed, pursuit, finding passing lanes
Weaknesses: not ideal size, production drop off between junior/senior year
Jaqwondis Burns is a 6’3”, 205-pound linebacker from IMG Academy in Bradenton, FL. Burns was previously committed to Ole Miss before a coaching change. Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, Utah, and Louisville were among other teams that offered Jaqwondis.
Burns is incredibly quick sideline to sideline and fits the exact profile of a lot of Fleck’s recent LB recruits (Braelen Oliver, Donald Willis, James Gordon, etc.). It is clear that the Minnesota staff is looking to increase the defensive speed. Jaqwondis has a great feel against the pass and has a knack for finding throwing lanes, continually getting a hand on passes before reaching their target.
Jaqwondis blitzes with incredible speed and identifies plays quickly as they are happening. There isn’t much not to like with Burns as a linebacker. One thing I did find interesting is that he transferred to IMG Academy his senior year and his highlight tape wasn’t nearly as impressive. It could’ve been less opportunity, could’ve been better competition, but either way his senior year film wasn’t as good as his junior year.
