Strengths: speed, dynamic

The Gophers received a late night commitment from Greenville, SC wide receiver Tyler Brown this weekend following an official visit to campus. Brown committed to Minnesota over offers from Harvard, Furman, East Tennessee State, South Carolina State, and other non-Power 5 schools. As a junior, Brown reeled in 71 passes for 1,034 yards and 15 touchdowns. He recorded a 10.87 100m time this spring.

Overall, I'm impressed with what I see from Brown. One thing I found when watching his film is how successful he is down the field. Brown makes a number of high pointed and contested catches in jump ball or deep ball scenarios, which is not always the case given a smaller receiver. The breakaway speed is evident from the get and how quickly he is able to get to his spot on the route. Tyler is a smooth runner that doesn't waste many steps after catching the ball. Plus-hands showing him making a lot of grabs outside of his body in various ways.

His high school team utilizes him in ways that I think should carry over to the Gophers quickly. A number of deep crossers and posts, which Minnesota runs a lot of. Additionally, his playmaking on screen passes is also something the Gophers do quite a bit, which I can see him carving out a role for himself potentially even early on in that regard.

This is unrelated to football, but Brown carries over a 4.0 GPA. Typically someone who is that committed in the class room also carries over that same mindset to other areas in their life. It makes me think that from a work ethic standpoint, that should carry over. Given his offer list doesn't include Power 5 schools, I'm interested in seeing his development. This is one I'm hoping we can look back on in a few years as a steal.
