David Roddy has options.
The multi-sport athlete from St. Paul is halfway between four official visits. He is currently taking time down from his basketball related trips to Colorado State and Minnesota. He will take another one to Northwestern on October 13, before taking wrapping things up on a football visit the following weekend in Wyoming.
The Gopher Report spoke with Roddy Monday night, one day after taking an official visit to his in-state and hometown university.
"It went well, " Roddy disclosed. "I had a good time with my old AAU teammates from Howard Pulley, Daniel Oturu, Jarvis Omersa, and Gabe Kalscheur. It is great to see them grow up in a college system. I'm proud of what they have accomplished and what they are going to accomplish. I also have a great relationship with the coaches, and it was great to see them. We've been forming a bond, so I enjoyed spending time with them, and also getting to take in some Gopher football."
Roddy went into detail about his relationship with the coaching staff and who has been leading that charge.
"My lead recruiter is Coach (Rob) Jeter. Our relationship has grown from our text messages and calls. I met him before during an in-home visit, but it was great to see him again in person. We are getting to know each other."
Roddy also made a similar description about his relationship with Richard Pitino.
"It has grown a lot. We have had a few conversations, but we got to spend some time with each other over the weekend. We even went over to his house to watch the Vikings/Packers game."
There was more to the visit though than a Sunday night football game. We asked him to walk us through the events of the weekend.
"I spent a lot of time with the players. It was great to see them. We toured the Athlete's Village, and met with the academic advisors and the Athletic Director, and we toured the campus. I'm a local guy, but there was a lot I didn't know about the campus. I also ate some good food. I had a good time."
So what could be some of the things that a hometown kid who has been on campus before not know?
"I didn't know how big it is. It's 1,100 acres and that blew my mind, but it makes sense with the two campuses. We also toured Northeast Minneapolis. My grandmother lives there, and I didn't realize how nice it is. The are a lot of old factories renovated into restaurants and stores."
The athletic facilities were also something that stood out to the recruit.
"They have top facilities. They're all in one spot, not only for basketball but for all of the sports. That is very convenient. All of the athletic facilities culminate into one spot. It's a good idea."
While Roddy is trying to decide between two sports, Pitino is not only recruiting against two other basketball programs but a football coaching staff as well. Needless to say, they are showing Roddy lots of love.
"They tell me they like my versatility plus my willingness to do the dirty work like taking charges, defending, getting on the floor, and rebounding. They also like my facilitative skills. They think that is handy with the offensive system they run. I play multiple positions, so it is a pretty cool fit for what they do."
The obvious question is does Minnesota hold the trump card considering it is his hometown school, he has friends from high school on the team, and the coaches are recruiting him hard?
"I try to take everything into consideration, " Roddy answered. "Having friends on the team and it being an in-state school is only a small factor. I'm looking to make the right decision for myself, my family, and my future. I'm in the process of doing a lot of research right now. I'm not focusing on old teammates."
Whether to play football or basketball is also something he is researching.
"I'm taking everything into consideration. I'm undecided. I'm blessed to be in this position. It will be a tough position. I'm going to do what is best for me going forward."
And is there any chance of him playing football at any other position besides him being a signal caller?
"It's Quarterback or not playing football at all. I'm confident in myself playing that position."
As for when he will make his final decision, Roddy closed by saying, "after football season. It could be immediately or three months from now, but it will be after the season."
