Saturday we played Antonio Shenault, a true freshman playing his first game, on defense in critical end-of-game situations. He is the 6th CB on our roster (Murray, BBC, Myrick, James, Hardin).
He did just fine. Didn't miss any tackles that I saw; didn't get beat in coverage. The amazing thing was that nobody panicked, everybody just went out and did his job and the defense didn't miss a beat.
For fun I took a look back at some of the old Mason and Brew rosters. On some of them I couldn't even find a 6th cornerback! On others the 4th and 5th guys were complete busts who never ended up playing in a game.
Our top 2 safeties are out, and #3 has also missed time. We're playing a walkon back there, and I thought he had as good a game as anyone on the defense Saturday.
We had SIX WRs catch passes, and a seventh guy really contributed as a blocking WR.
The point I am making is that recruiting rankings are obviously crap. Kill's classes have been ranked similarly to Mason's, and worse than Brew's, but our roster is obviously stocked with many many more good players than we've ever had.
The other point is...so many of these guys are freshmen. Really bodes well for the future.
