In virtually all these games on the weekend, the games have been all about the 3 point shot and how to set that up.. The bigs are active in getting rebounds and putbacks. AND SETTING SCREENS. Or passing out to the perimeter for the 3 pointer.. All the good teams have their 1-3 players that can shoot the 3 ball or drive. The 4s and 5s of the best teams are active.. Michigan State was the only winning team that really used some point of the game to get it to the low post. We have talked about this, ad nauseum, but it almost seems that this style of ball is essential to be competitive, anymore.

It changes not only what type of ballplayer you want on offense but what you want on the floor on defense.. You have to be able to switch easily and even if the person you switch off on has a size advantage, you better bring something to the table to make it hard on the opponent TO WHOM you are switching off.. Quick hands, good positioning, etc. Plus the ability to shoot FTs when transitioning to offense and running.

That PG from Auburn was the key to their victory today..Fast and quick plus a good FT shooter. Multi skilled to give them points. Purdue's Carson Edwards was practically unconscious and teammate Ryan Kline was in past games. Michigan State can talk about Nick Ward down low but it was more about the efficiency of Cassius Winston, Matt McQuaid, and Aaron Henry..Even Xavier Tillman and Kenny Goins from the outside. The Texas Tech kids are all about the guards and wings, as far as scoring.. The bigs are very mobile on defense for them and do limited things for them, offensively. Virginia is all about crashing the boards with their bigs and moving very well at the 4s and 5s while their wings and guards dominate scoring on the drive and the 3 ball..

The 3 point line has changed the game, for sure... Double digit point leads can decimate in a hurry.. WIthout the 3 point line, the object of offenses was to get the ball closest to the bucket possible so they can increase their chance at getting the 2 pointer... Not anymore. A very different game in the last decade and it has made the game more athletic and smaller. But you have to have multidimensional players at the guards and wings for sure and maybe even bleed into the bigs. Welcome to college basketball in the 21st century!!
