The University of Minnesota volleyball program will enter the 2018 campaign as the fourth-ranked team in the nation, released today by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.
In all, seven Big Ten Conference teams are ranked in the preseason top 25. Nebraska holds the No. 2 spot, while Minnesota (4) is followed by Penn State (6), Wisconsin (9), Illinois (12), Michigan State (22) and Purdue (23). Michigan received votes in the opening poll.
The Gophers are coming off a Sweet 16 berth in 2017 and finished with an overall 28-6 record. Minnesota went 15-5 in the Big Ten, good enough for third in league action. The Golden Gophers return 12 letterwinners to the 2018 squad, including five starters. Of the five, three were 2017 All-Americans in senior Samantha Seliger-Swenson, junior Alexis Hart and sophomore Stephanie Samedy.
Minnesota opens the season on August 24-25 when the Gophers host the Big Ten/ACC Challenge at Target Center. Tickets are on sale for the event HERE.
Minnesota begins matches at Maturi Pavilion on Aug. 31 for the annual Diet Coke Classic. Big Ten Conference play begins on Sept. 19 when Penn State comes to town.
