Ryan Thomas, a top flight wrestling recruit for the Gophers and defending state champion in Ohio at 160 pounds, lost in this year's finals to Kevon Freeman of Mentor Lake Catholic... Freeman is quite the accomplished wrestler himself as he won his third state championship in his career... It was one of the best matches in the entire tournament and it was tied 2-2 going into the 3rd period... Freeman caught Thomas with a takedown and rode it out for the victory.......Freeman had won his previous 2 state titles at 132 and 145 pounds..... Thomas was the favorite going into the match despite Freeman beating Thomas earlier in the year, as well, at the state duals. Freeman gave up the first takedown he experienced at the state meet since his freshman year when Thomas took him down in the first period for the early lead. As Gopher fans, we should hardly worry about it as Thomas is a very very talented wrestler. This state championship just happened to be a heck of a match and Freeman relished being considered the underdog, throughout the tournament, at that weight class.

In other notes in Ohio HS wrestling, Thomas' teammate Mitch Moore became part of the prestigious club of 4 time state champions in Ohio at 132 lbs.. Moore was #2 ranked in the nation at the weight class and is a Virginia Tech signee. David Carr of Massillon Perry also joined the 4 time state champion group as he won the 152 pound class in Division 2...Carr is an Iowa State recruit.
