The Minnesota Golden Gophers football team is in the middle of the Big 10 pack when it comes to on-field performance, attendance and revenue.

That’s according to research from The Business Journals, which ranked the 65 Power Five football programs across the country based on those categories over the past five years. The Gophers ranking was aided by the success of former coach Jerry Kill, who went 20-13 in his last two-and-a-half seasons at the helm, before he resigned for health reasons.

As you might expect, the best football programs tend to be located in the Southeast, where schools like Alabama, LSU and Georgia have been powerhouses for years.

Methodology for college football success index
American City Business Journals analyzed the relative effectiveness of all 65 Power Five college football programs at achieving their twin goals of winning games and making money.

  • GROUP: The Power Five encompasses teams in five conferences (Atlantic Coast, Big Ten, Big 12, Pacific 12 and Southeastern) plus Notre Dame, an independent.
  • SOURCES: Raw data came from Sports Reference (win-loss records and national poll results), the National Collegiate Athletic Association (home attendance) and the U.S. Education Department (football revenue). ACBJ used the raw data to calculate winning percentages, top 25 rating points, average attendance and total revenue.
  • COMPONENTS: Half of each team’s score was determined by its record on the field, the other half by its success as a business. The on-field components were win-loss records and Associated Press poll standings for the past five seasons. (ACBJ awarded points to the top 25 teams in each year’s final AP poll.) The business components were average home attendance and total football revenue for the same five-year period.
  • SCORING: Each college’s results were compared to the study group’s averages in all four categories. The four factors were weighted equally. Above-average performances received positive scores, while below-average results received negative scores.
  • INDEX: Raw scores were converted to a 100-point scale. The top team in ACBJ’s College Football Success Index (Alabama) was anchored at 100 points, with the bottom team (Kansas) at zero.
