Gophers In The Super Bowl

Former Gophers Marcus Sherels and Jalen Myrick and their respective teams will be competing on Sunday for a berth in Super Bowl LII, which will be contested in Minneapolis on Feb. 4, 2018.

Sherels and the Minnesota Vikings advanced to the NFC championship game with a thrilling last-second win against the New Orleans Saints last Sunday. Sherels returned one punt for 19 yards in Minnesota's 29-24 win. The Rochester, Minn., native and the Vikings finished the regular season 13-3 and will now face the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday for the right to play in the Super Bowl. In the regular season, Sherels had six tackles in 16 games this year. He has also returned 11 kickoffs for 271 yards and 39 punts for 372 yards.

Myrick and the Jacksonville Jaguars advanced to the AFC championship game after beating the Buffalo Bills at home and the Pittsburgh Steelers on the road. They will face the New England Patriots on Sunday and the winner will advance to the Super Bowl. Myrick had one tackle in the win against the Steelers. He played in five regular season games, breaking up one pass and returning one kickoff for 18 yards.

Former Gopher Damarius Travis will also have keen interest in the games this weekend as he is on New England's practice squad. Travis was signed by New England to the practice squad on Sept. 3 after competing for the Patriots in the preseason.
