Gopher head coaches and administrators will pack into a bus this May and hit the highway for the 2018 Gopher Road Trip. The latest edition of the athletics department’s springtime tradition will visit nine cities throughout greater Minnesota, first on the two-day Maroon trip in early May, followed by the two-day Gold trip at the end of the month.

“The Gopher Road Trip is our biggest and best opportunity each year to bring Gopher Athletics on the road to visit our fans around our state,” said Athletics Director Mark Coyle. “It’s fun to interact with fans and show our appreciation by visiting them where they are, after they invest so much in visiting us in the Twin Cities throughout our fall, winter and spring seasons. I enjoy my road trip experience every year and I know our coaches do as well.”

The opening leg of this year’s trip will bring the Gophers south of the Twin Cities on Monday, May 7 and Tuesday, May 8. A lineup featuring head coaches P.J. Fleck (football), Richard Pitino (men’s basketball), Bob Motzko (men’s hockey), Hugh McCutcheon (volleyball), Stefanie Golan (soccer), Brandon Eggum (wrestling), Justin Smith (men’s golf), Catrina Thompson (women’s tennis), Mike Burns (men’s gymnastics) and Jenny Hansen (women’s gymnastics) will visit Cannon Falls and Rochester on their first day, before visiting Owatonna, Kasota and Hutchinson prior to returning to Dinkytown. The initial stop in Cannon Falls will be the first time the Gopher Road Trip has visited.

Two weeks later, the Gophers will head out again, this time driving west and north of campus on Wednesday, May 23 and Thursday, May 24. The trip will again feature Fleck, Pitino and Motzko, with Brad Frost (women’s hockey), John Carlson (men’s golf), Wendy Davis (rowing) and Kelly Kremer (swimming and diving) jumping aboard. The group will start their trip with visits to St. Cloud and Brainerd on their first day together before stopping in Perham and Alexandria to close out this year’s road trip. The Wednesday event in St. Cloud will be the first time the Gopher Road Trip has visited the Granite City since 2014, and that evening’s stop will be the first time the Gopher Road Trip has hosted fans in Brainerd.

Since the modern inception of the Gopher Road Trip in 2013, more than 11,500 Gopher fans have attended events across Minnesota.

Every event on the Gopher Road Trip is completely free to attend and open to the public, but space is limited, especially at smaller venues. Fans are encouraged to secure their spot in advance by registering online to attend events.
