Minneapolis will host the Super Bowl on Feb. 4 when the New England Patriots host the Philadelphia Eagles for the right to be called world champion. The Patriots will be seeking their sixth world championship, while the Eagles are looking for their first. In preparation of the big game, we will take a look back in the coming days at some former Gophers who went on to Super Bowl fame.

The Gophers have had 16 players combine to win 22 super bowl championships.

They have had another 18 players that have competed in a combined 28 Super Bowls.

Jim Fanhorst is Minnesota's most decorated Super Bowl champion as he won a ring in 1985, 1989 and 1990 with the 49ers. His brother Keith Fanhorst was a member of San Francisco's championship teams in 1982 and 1985 and along with Jim is one of only five former Gophers to win multiple Super Bowls. Read their full story here.

Gale Gillingham was part of the first two Super Bowl championships with the Green Bay Packers. Tony Dungy is the only Gopher to play and coach in a super bowl victory. Tyrone Carter is the last Gopher to win multiple Super Bowls with titles in 2006 and 2009 with the Pittsburg Steelers.

The team with the most Gophers to take part in a single Super Bowl victory was the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl IV. Bobby Bell, Aaron Brown and Bob Stein all took part in that win over fellow Gopher Kent Kramer and his Minnesota Vikings. Gophers have faced each other in four Super Bowls: I, II, IV and XXII.

The last Gophers to compete in a Super Bowl were Ra’Shede Hageman and De’Vondre Campbell. They lost with the Atlanta Falcons last year.

The last Gopher to win a Super Bowl was Matt Spaeth in 2009 with the Steelers.

The last Gopher to win when the Super Bowl was in Minneapolis was Chip Lohmiller with the Redskins in 1992.

Former Gopher Damarius Travis is in Minneapolis for the “Big Game” this weekend. He is on the New England Patriots practice squad.
