Football coach Mike Leach loves to "stir the pot" as he is very opinionated. It is what makes him interesting to listen to in his speech.
He came out with a comment about the winner of the Kentucky Derby and it was a long shot that won the race.. He compared that to the college football playoffs and its expansion. He thinks it should be expanded, obviously.
The "plus one" has worked pretty good and the voters have probably done a pretty good job analyzing who is the best 4 teams, though there will always be arguments. The only 2 arguments for expansion that I can picture are allowing 8 teams and 16 teams, which would add 1 or 2 weeks to the season.
If you took 8 teams in the playoff, essentially you are buying into allowing the top 10 teams into a playoff format. If you allow 16 teams in, it is like taking the top 20 teams The more you allow, the more chance you allow a darkhorse team from a smaller conference to prove themselves. It would probably allow more money in the coffers, as well. As far as cutting into class time of the players, my opinion is that it SHOULD NOT BE PART OF THE ARGUMENT. Smaller divisions may have schools that have classes more demanding than bigger colleges, yet they take 16 teams in their football playoffs.
I am one who does think the subject should be revisited by the ones in charge, every year.
