Richard Pitino got his first measuring stick for this year's Minnesota team as they went on the road Saturday afternoon to defeat Iowa State in overtime, 77-68.
Both rosters are full of newcomers, and Pitino admitted afterwards that either coach was necessarily coaching to win, but rather "looking at different things." Nevertheless, the Gophers outscored the Cyclones 14-5 in the extra five minute session to walk away with the win.
Iowa State is a preseason pick to finish toward the middle of the pack in this season's Big 12. They finished 23-12 last season with a 9-9 mark in league play. They Cyclones lost 78.6 percent of their scoring from last season including three players who averaged in double digits.
Minnesota dominated much of the first half and took an eleven point lead at the 11:08 mark of the first half, but Iowa State made a closing run to go into the half trailing 29-27. The Cyclones continued its momentum out of the locker room and moved their lead to to five with 13:49 remaining. The score went back and forth, but neither could close out the other as the two teams went into overtime deadlocked at 63.
The starting backcourt duo of Marcus Carr and Gabe Kalscheur led the Gophers with 17 points apiece. Kalscheur hit four 3-pointers. Daniel Oturuwent for a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Payton Willis was the fourth player in double figures with 12. He nailed three of six 3-pointers.
Michael Hurt had 6 points and 4 boards. Alihan Demir added 4 points and 6 rebounds. Jarvis Omersa went for 3 points and 5 rebounds. Isaiah Ihnen had 3, Bryan Greenlee 2, Tre Williams and Sam Freeman played and did not score.
Minnesota was 25 of 66 from the field for 37.9 percent, but went 6 for 8 in the all-important overtime session. They were 8 for 28 from behind the arc for 28.6 percent. Away from Kalscheur who has 4 for 11, and Willis who was 3 for 6, the rest of the team combined for a 1 for 11 clip. The foul shooting numbers were encouraging as they went 19 of 23 for 82.6 percent.
The Gophers pounded the boards to an advantage of eleven, 51-40. That was monumental on the offensive side. They had 16 offensive boards which resulted in 20 second chance points. Oturu combined with perimeter penetration combined for 28 points in the paint. The outing was basically a half-court affair with only six total fast break points scored.
They also held Iowa State to 30.6 precent shooting overall and 21.9 percent from 3-point territory. The Cyclones are three-centric in their offense. 32 of their 72 attempts were from deep. A source who saw the scrimmage told us that he felt the the team defended well.
The important part of a pre-season scrimmage is for the coaches to see what they can work on. Richard Pitino described the team's 20 turnovers and 22 fouls as "insufficient basketball." They also gave up 13 offensive rebounds which led to 14 Iowa State second chance points.
It is understandable that team's are not going to run clean offense in October, but cleaning it up will be a huge point of emphasis. Only 9 of Minnesota's 28 buckets were the result of an assist. Obviously a 9 to 20 assist to turnover ratio is not what Pitino is looking for. Carr had 4 assists, but also led the team in turnovers with 5. Oturu had 4 turnovers in the post, and Kalscheur added 2.
The same source also told us that the coaching staff was pleased with the play of the newer team members. Pitino noted after the game that Tre Williams, Michael Hurt, Jarvis Omersa, and Bryan Greenlee were in the group that rallied the Gophers late in the game. Payton Willis also hit a big 3-pointer in the latter stages. Our source noted that Willis played the one, two, and three, and made "winning plays."
We were also told this was not an up and down affair, but was treated like a real game by each staff with each team running a lot of the offensive looks that they will be going with early in the season. Iowa State ran mostly man, but did run a three quarter press that even backed into a few possessions of zone.
Solomon Young, a 6-foot-8, 245 pound power forward led Iowa State with 15 points. Their other post, George Condit IV, was the only other Cyclone to hit double figure with 11.
The Gophers will take the floor next on October 28 in an exhibition against Southwest Minnesota State. Tip-off will be at 7:00 P.M. in Williams Arena.
