Sid opened up by asking PJ about Corey Davis, the wide receiver from Western Michigan who went 5th overall and Taylor Moton, an offensive tackle from Western Michigan who was selected with the last pick of the second round. Fleck said he was not surprised that Corey was selected that high because he became what the culture was all about. He was a freshman All-American, and then was a consensus All-American as a senior. He never got in trouble and did all the right things. Fleck spoke highly of Taylor Moton as well, said he got better every year. Also credited Brian Callahan for coaching him up.

Fleck said that everyone gets caught up in the stars of players coming out of high school. He wants players that are not only five star talents, but have five star hearts. Talked about how it is important to recruit high school players and recruiting current players to buy in to culture.

There is an evaluation period going on in recruiting right now, so no contact can be made to student athletes. They are evaluating athletes and collecting transcripts. “It’s not about stars, it’s about the right fit at the University of Minnesota.”

Coach is not surprised that they are ranked in the Top 10 for recruiting in the 2018 class, due to the coaches they have that work extremely hard, and because of all that the state of Minnesota has to offer. “3.5 million people, 18 Fortune 500 companies that are within 5 miles of campus, one of the greatest institutions in the nation.” He’s happy that people are seeing not only why we can, but that are buying in. It’s going to be a process.

Mostly all of the injuries from spring ball should be ready to go by fall. Only 1 or 2 may not be ready. He didn’t list an specific names. PJ gave credit to the coaches being creative on how to install things, including getting injured kids within the mix to learn the scheme as well.

Coach Fleck said they may have to move a couple linebackers down to defensive line due to lack of depth. Brought up Antoine Winfield by name as someone that allows them to do a lot, since he can play in the box, player corner, safety, etc. They will need to be creative in their blitzes and schemes, not in their base rotation.

He ended of course with a “Row The Boat and Ski-U-Mah.”
