Sid opened asking about the four-part ESPN series on PJ Fleck that will showcase in August. Fleck called it “incredible exposure” for the University of Minnesota and that it is his job to bring light to Minnesota in a very positive way.
Big Ten Media Days is in Chicago starting today (Monday, July 24th), and PJ noted that he’s extremely excited to be there starting off the football season. “Every time you’re there, that means you’re still a head football coach.” Jonathan Celestin, Rodney Smith, and Steven Richardson will be joining Fleck in Chicago. He gave them credit for being mentally tough throughout their college careers, having three head coaches in their four years there.
No decision has been made on the couple extra scholarships for the 2017 class. Fleck did mention that they may look at transfers or graduate transfers for a year. “They have to be the right fit, the right person, at the right position. We won’t just bring anyone in.”
Training camp schedule is set; however, Coach Fleck has not decided which practices will be open or not. He said it will probably happen this week.
Dave inquired about if they will have two running backs on the field at the same time. Fleck commented that while they typically are not a two-back scheme, they may use one of them split out as a receiver to get their best on the field.
Sid questioned the sideline question again, and PJ joked that he has never seen this much exposure about a sideline is his entire life. They have not made an administrative decision on which sideline they will be on. Most of the opposition to moving sidelines is because of season ticket holders who chose their spots behind the bench.
Coach indicated the team will practice at TCF Bank Stadium more than the typically have in the past, as he wants the players to build some familiarity at the stadium before having to play there seven times a year.
The 22 players with offseason surgeries at getting healthy, as some are already back, and others are working their way into the mix. You never really know how healthy you are until you are back actually playing football.
