Sid opened asking about the new Early Signing Period, PJ said that it’s a wonderful opportunity for kids to sign earlier. He believes that is shows that NCAA coaches are willing to change in order to make things better.
Mike questioned about having to see a kid in his senior year before knowing whether you want to offer, Fleck responded that some kids you do. For some, if you trust what you see as a sophomore and junior, then you don’t need to. However, Fleck said he understands that some kids are late bloomers, and that seeing them as a senior is necessary in certain cases. “When you have success with late bloomers, you always want to keep some scholarships open.”
As for the early signing period next year, it’ll allow them to have official visits in April and May, where as in the past they would have to come in November and December. Having kids come for an official visit, where the school can pay for everything, later in the year when it’ll be warmer will be beneficial for the U. Coach said that it’ll help with the 2019 class.
All the incoming freshmen and players are home for a couple week break, and then start summer school. PJ thinks that it is extremely beneficial for students to get ahead in their degree and gain scholarship money in the summer. They are allowed to do anything on their own (without pads), so they run a lot of their own captain’s practices. The players are allowed to be with the strength coach.
Fleck is hands-off when it comes to the summer, because he doesn’t want players to be sick of the coaches by the time two-a-days and the season comes around.
As for the ratio of pass to run, Coach Fleck said it depends on the players they have. In the past, it has been very evenly split, but they will do whatever they need to do in order to win. He believes all good football teams are balanced. On the decision to receive or defer, it will depend based upon the environment, weather, sun direction, wind, etc. PJ stated that he looks at everything when it comes to that decision, but that he does like to defer so that they can make halftime adjustments and receive coming out of half.
Coaches are out on the road recruiting, and once they return in a couple of weeks they will start opponent preparation. “Every game is really tough in the Big Ten, and whenever you have a whole new culture and scheme, everything is hard. You have to do about four years of work in one year. You don’t want to sacrifice down the road for right now.”
Dave questioned how soon would Coach like to name a starting quarterback. Fleck responded that ideally within the first week of training camp. The first week will be the carry-over competition from the spring, because it gives them an opportunity to showcase their growth from the spring. You want to be able to give the starter all of the first team reps to be able to train and prepare for the opponent.
