PJ FLECK

*** Fleck said you have to credit Iowa for how they played and that he took full responsibility for the loss.

*** Fleck said getting down early took the team out of their rhythm a bit.

*** He said he didn’t think his team played well on offense, defense, or special teams.

*** Struggles in the first half were simple things: setting the edge, tackling, etc.

*** Fleck said the high of beating Penn State had nothing to do with this loss. He thought the team had “a tremendous week of practice.”

*** On his penalty following the Tyler Johnson drop, he was told he ran onto the field “too fast…didn’t know there was a red light and green light for when he go on the field.” Saw his player “motionless on the field, the play was over, whistle had blown” and ran onto the field. Fleck said he’d do it all over again. He watched one of his players break his neck at Rutgers. Always wants to be the first person they see and have them know they’re supported.

*** Tanner Morgan was “woozy and wobbly…There was no way I was going to send him back onto the field.” Asked if he was going through concussion protocol, he said “he better be.”

*** Fleck said he doesn’t regret decision to go for it or kick on any of the fourth down decisions. Fleck said that he believes in his players and wanted to give Walker a chance to hit the 50-yard field goal. Said it’s at the back end of his range but still in his range and that he had the wind at his back.

*** His message to team and state of Minnesota is that “this isn’t the end of the world… everything is still in front of them.” He said the loss hurts and it should hurt, and it matters and should matter, but that everything is still in front of them and they’re now 0-0 in the Northwestern season.

Notes from players

*** Tyler Johnson said that Fleck in the locker room after the game kept the message simple: 0-1 in the Iowa season and need to get back to work for the Northwestern season.

*** Rodney Smith said the loss can be attributed to a lack of execution, particularly in the redzone.
