The Big10 channel had the game on Saturday morning. We were really lucky to win that game. Our defense was gashed again and again for long plays. Purdue softened us up on the edges, but then had a lot of success running it straight up the gut. Purdue's back was going untouched and no one could get an angle. There was a a Purdue touchdown throw where there was no Gopher within 20 yards of the Purdue tightend that caught it. Was there something in our scheme that was off that game?
Without great efforts from Cobb, Maye, and Leidner plus a 52 yard field goal, we lose. It was an interesting game for Leidner. His recievers did not help him much early, but he got on a hot streak and threw some great passes in the second half. He did miss a wide open Williams on an intermediate route on a crucial third down, but got bailed out because Purdue roughed him.
Limegrover's play calling was very poor on the drive that resulted in our 52 yard field goal. He ran it three straight plays up the gut into the teeth of a run blitz. It is strange that he did not roll Leidner out on a run pass option because that play had generally worked.
Although Purdue graduated its good running back, they have to be very confident that they can play with us. Hopefully, our defensive line can take a step forward, because we need to get much stronger in the run defense.
