Strengths: Speed, downhill mentality, diagnosing & reacting
Weaknesses: Size
Ahmad McCullough is a 6’2” 210-pound LB originally from the Baltimore area, now attending Hutchinson Community College in Hutchinson, KS. His high school film showed him playing a 3-4 OLB position and occasionally a hybrid safety, whereas his JUCO film has him as a 4-3 OLB, which is where he will play at Minnesota. He is much more natural for the 4-3 OLB role than coming off the edge for college.
Overall, I’m very impressed with his tape from JUCO spring. It is just spring ball, but there are a lot of traits that he shows that I love to see. First, he is extremely quick and gets sideline to sideline. Additionally, he comes downhill in a hurry. If he gets flow his way or sees a hole open up, he goes and does not wait. McCullough is physical at the point of attack taking on blockers and does an extremely good job of reading/diagnosing plays and reacting. Great football instincts. Relentless in his pursuit of getting after the quarterback. Another underappreciated skill of Ahmad’s is that he does not lose his feet when he tackles. He fits the running backs upright and continues to pump his legs.
The only real knock that I can consider at this point in time is his size at 6’2”, 210 pounds. He will be a bit undersized at LB however I don’t take that into much consideration. He will be a perfect 4-3 WILL LB (weakside linebacker) where he can utilize his speed and not have to take on bigger offensive lineman like a SAM linebacker.
Minnesota thinks they got a “super sleeper” in McCullough and I have to agree. He still has yet to play a JUCO down, but I really like what I see from him so far and am excited to see his development.
