Thomas Barber emerged as a breakout star last season as a sophomore. The legacy Gopher started all 12 games and finished first on the team with 115 tackles to rank third in the Big Ten and tied for 20th in the nation.
Amazingly, 76 of Barber's 115 tackles – or 66% of his total tackles - were solo stops. His 76 solo tackles ranked first in the Big Ten and tied for seventh nationally. Baber's 66% solo-tackle rate ranked third in the nation behind only Christian Sam of Arizona State and Joe Dineen Jr. of Kansas. Sam made 127 total tackles, of which 87 were solo stops (68.5%). Dineen totaled 137 total tackles, which included 93 solo stops (67.8%).
Barber, who is from Plymouth, Minn., made 10.5 tackles for loss (second on the team and 18th in the Big Ten), while forcing three fumbles (tied for second in the Big Ten) and recovering two fumbles (tied for second in the Big Ten) in 2017. He recorded double-digit tackles in seven Big Ten games and also notched one interception en route to being named All-Big Ten Third Team (media) and All-Big Ten Honorable Mention (coaches).
