Based on the incoming talent this fall and what they have this spring, the coaches are starting to assemble positions charts.
At his first spring football press conference, head coach Tracy Claeys said he and his staff would begin assembling a position chart two weeks into practice. Claeys did not speak to the media after practice on Thursday, but defensive coordinator Jay Sawvel touched on how the coaching staff is taking its time putting together a position chart as opposed to a depth chart.
"We don't really worry about that (depth chart) as much. Right now, part of it is the fact that we know there's going to be probably quite a few guys that come in new in the fall that will have to contribute in some role, too," Sawvel said.
The position chart is also missing some pieces. Sawvel said the defense is minus three safeties this spring in Duke McGee, Ace Rogers and Zo Craighton, who is dealing with an ankle injury.
"And we only have four corners on scholarship here right now, we have three more coming, so that changes things, too," he said. "We just tell them don't worry about depth chart or what you think you are or where you're at right now."
Sawvel said the staff will start looking at depth charts toward the end of spring.
"When we really (can say) "Ok, now we have everything in, you've had practice after practice to do it...are you doing the right things? Are you making plays? Are you being productive? Right now, these last two days on defense we've installed a whole bunch of stuff. We worked through it pretty good but it's hard to evaluate a guy the first time you put something in because he doesn't play as fast as he will maybe Tuesday or next Thursday."
Sawvel said he's looking forward to how the linebackers will perform next season, especially with the additions of U.S. Army All-American Carter Coughlin and three-star prospect Thomas Barber, two linebackers who will most certainly see playing time as freshman.
