FOOTBALL | 12/10/2018 2:29:00 PM

Payton Jordahl and Gary Moore each earned First-Team honors while Sam Renner was named Second-Team. The Gophers only had three Academic All-America® honorees in one other season when Justin Conzemius, Omar Douglas and Jeff Rosga all earned Second-Team accolades in 1993. Brandon Lingen was the last football player to be named Academic All-America® when he earned the distinction in 2015. In the previous 12 seasons the Gophers only had two Academic All-America® honorees in Lingen and Maxx Williams and Williams was the only First-Team honoree in that span.

Jordahl, Moore and Renner are three of 17 Division I Football Team members with a 4.0 GPA to be named Academic All-America®.

Jordahl already has his undergraduate degree in youth development leadership and is working on obtaining a master's degree. He holds a 4.0 GPA. He has spent all four seasons as the Gophers primary long snapper and has snapped 498 times in his career (269 punt, 144 point after attempts and 85 field goals). He has also made 10 tackles and recovered one fumble.

Moore also earned his undergraduate degree already and is working on his master's degree in youth development leadership. He has a 4.0 GPA and has been a mainstay on the Gophers defensive line the past two seasons. Last April, Moore was presented with the Richard "Pinky" McNamara Student-Athlete Achievement Award, a distinction given to those who inspire others through their success amid adversity.

Renner earned his undergraduate degree and is going for his master's degree in accountancy. He has a 4.0 GPA and has been steady in the Gophers defensive line rotation after being awarded a scholarship last spring.

Football Recruiting Weekend visitor reactions

Peter Udoibok: "My visit was amazing! I truly love the University of Minnesota. I always loved the University and wanted to be here but ever since the visit I love and want it more. My favorite part was definitely getting to know the team and spending time with the host. It’s truly a family and it’s the best feeling in the world. They treat you like a brother and it’s no place like home. I really bonded with Mayan Ahanotou and Brevyn Spann-Ford. The most unexpected part of my trip was the hypnotist that came because he blew my mind and it was so fun."

Brady Weeks: "The official visit blew away my expectations. There wasn’t a part of the trip they couldn’t do better. I was able to catch up with every coach. I bonded the most with Camden (Lewis) while also with JJ (Guedet), Jacob Clark, and Cole Kramer. The most unexpected part of the trip was getting hypnotized. I can’t wait to get up there and win a championship for the people of Minnesota."

Camden Lewis: "My favorite part was the hypnotist they brought in last night to mess with some guys. I was with Brady Weeks and Coach Wenger the most."

Jason Williamson: "The visit was really fun. The best part was probably the hypnotist and being with all the guys. I got to know almost all of them and they're all great guys. I talked to about every coach and love all of them and can't wait to get up there."

Cole Kramer: "It was awesome! Favorite part was building a better bond with the rest of the commits and really getting close with each other. I talked to most of the coaches but was mainly around Ciarrocca, Simon, and Fleck the most. I bonded with all the players as well. The most unexpected part of the trip was for sure the hypnotist."

Isaiah Hookfin: "Great visit! I love the facilities. Curtis Dunlap was my host and made the visit amazing. Coach Cally guided me and helped throughout and made it fun."

Wrestling Rolls over Fresno State 31-6

We have a pretty easy dual meet at Fresno State on Saturday night at 9pm CT, streamed live on Flowrestling.com. The FSU Bulldogs are not too tough, they lost to Air Force who we crushed!! I have us winning every match, with a team score of 37-0. We could lose a couple close matches that we should win, then the score might be something like 31-6. So, it still wouldn't be close.

Here is the article from Gophersports.com, followed by my match predictions:

Fresno State Wrestling

The Gophers will travel to California for their second away dual of the year against the Fresno State Bulldogs on Saturday December 8, 2018 at 9pm CT.

The Match-Up

No. 9 Minnesota will travel to Fresno State for a Saturday night dual. The two teams met last year when Minnesota defended Maturi Pavilion in a 38-7 dual while some of the team's wrestlers also met this past weekend at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.

No. 3 Gable Steveson defeated No. 19 AJ Nevills by major decision in the quarterfinals.

Last Time Out

The Gophers took a break from their dual season with a trip out to Las Vegas for the prestigious Cliff Keen Invitational that featured more than half of the country's ranked wrestlers. As a team Minnesota placed sixth with 79.5 points and crowned true freshman Gable Steveson as heavyweight champion. 125-pound Sean Russell placed third, 133-pound Ethan Lizak placed fourth, and 174-pound Devin Skatzka placed seventh.

Before the tournament the Gophers beat down South Dakota State in a 35-6 dual that featured five bonus point victories.

About the Bulldogs

Fresno State has started their dual season 3-4 with two of those victories against Division III schools. Both teams faced off against Air Force with the Bulldogs falling 19-15 while the Gophers won 33-3.

Fresno State finished the Cliff Keen Invitational tournament with 29.5 points at 25th place.

While Steveson beat Nevills, he is one of their best wrestlers, according to rankings. Nevills is ranked by multiple outlets while 149-pound Khristian Olivas is ranked 23rd by TrackWrestling.

Last season the team finished 4-16. Nevills and Olivas were the teams two NCAA Qualifiers.

Injury Replacements

With both 141-pound Mitch McKee and 157-pound Steve Bleise out for at least the rest of the month the Gophers have called upon Brent Jones and Miles Patton to fill in for McKee and Bleise respectively.

Jones competed at the Cliff Keen Invitational where he finished 1-2 and Patton last competed in the South Dakota State dual where he dropped his decision 10-5.

Climbing the Ladder

Both Ethan Lizak and Tommy Thorn are making moves up the all-time career wins list. With his victory over South Dakota State, Thorn moved up into 61st with a career record of 77-34. Lizak has vaulted into 48th on the all-time list with a career record of 98-29, three wins away from the century mark.

Elsewhere Carson Brolsma just surpassed 30 career wins at the tournament in Las Vegas and now sits at 32 victories. Sean Russell now has 106 wins in his career including the 11 he has this season in Minnesota.

Next Up

The Gophers will travel to Florida for the South Beach Duals just before the New Year before kicking off their Big Ten schedule. Minnesota will host Rutgers and Iowa before traveling to Illinois and Northwestern the weekend of January 18.

The Gophers continue to only wrestle Big Ten duals until the final home dual, Senior Night, against Rider which will be hosted at Northrop Auditorium on campus.

Match Predictions:

125
- #5 Sean Russell wins by tech fall over Robert Garcia IV (MN 5 - FSU 0)
133
- #8 Ethan Lizak wins by tech fall over Gary Joint (10-0)
141
- Brent Jones wins over Chris Deloza (13-0)
149
- Tommy Thorn wins over Kristian Olivas (16-0)
157
- Miles Patton wins over Isaiah Hokit (19-0)
165
- Carson Brolsma wins over Jacob Wright (22-0)
174
- #16 Devin Skatzka wins by major dec. over Ricky Padilla (26-0)
184

197
- Brandon Krone wins by major dec. over Danny Salas (33-0)
285
- #2 Gable Steveson wins by major dec. over #19 AJ Nevills (37-0)
Final Score 37-0

I don't think I'm just being a homer by giving us every match, as I think this is what the results should be. If we lose any matches, these are the likely ones:

- 141 Brent Jones loses to Deloza
- 149 Tommy Thorn loses to Olivas
- 157 Miles Patton loses to Hokit
- 184 Owen Webster loses to Hemauer.
