WEIRD QUESTION.. When did NFL coaches stop wearing suit & ties as a general rule, during games?

Someone asked me that yesterday... I think it was in the 1970's..I am old enough to remember Paul Brown coaching at Cincinnati and Hank Stram at Kansas City where both wore suit jackets and ties.. Stram had the Chiefs shield on his blazer. Of course, Tom Landry at Dallas with the Fedora hat and the suit coat and tie.. I was very young when Vince Lombardi coached his last game with the Redskins.. Lombardi had a suit coat and tie... I think Don Shula wore that when he coached in Baltimore but that changed when he coached in Miami.

I dont remember Bud Grant ever wearing a suit and tie on the field.. But ironically he was disciplining players to stand at attention for the national anthem, so he wanted the players to look sharp in other areas... Most coaches went to a collared shirt.. Bum Phillips wore his cowboy hat and old west gidde up.. Now you got Belichick wearing sweat suits and all kinds of comfortable wear on the sidelines.. It is interesting, if you ask me.

I can still remember when I was a kid in St Paul that EVERYONE DRESSED UP when they left the house.. Watch old videos.. The fans dressed up when they went to a ball game. I remember having to dress up just to take the bus to downtown St Paul. That is just how I was raised.... We are in a much more casual society, for the good or for the bad, in terms of dress. I started realizing how old fashioned I was when I was completely shocked to see someone attend a funeral in shorts. My first impression was that was disrespectful but I realize that is a bit judgemental. When I was in school, shorts were not allowed to be worn to school... I never even wore jeans to school until high school.. Mom would not let me.

Back to coaching.. I see Fleck wearing a tie.. Jim Tressel had the sweater vest and tie on.. A few others wearing a tie on the field but no one anymore with a suit coat and tie on during game day.. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHEN THAT STOPPED BEING THE STANDARD????

Football Recruiting Demariyon Houston: Friday update

Login to view embedded media We've had updates on Houston the past few days, and here's another based on what we're hearing.

Demariyon Houston and his family may be waiting until February to sign, as we have reported. Why he would do this? Likely to hold out for an offer from Oklahoma, which he does not currently have. The Sooners top priority right now is five-star Jadon Haselwood. He will not be making his decision until January 5th, which is after the early signing period. People connected with both Georgia and Oklahoma believe that Georgia is the favorite and he will likely recommit to the Bulldogs.

Now to the Oklahoma side of things. If they aren't able to get Haselwood, which isn't expected right now, who do they move on to? Houston is most likely only a target if they aren't able to get him. Even then, it seems like they are not set on adding another receiver to this class. They have two five-stars already committed and have talent returning, and I have heard from multiple sources that Oklahoma isn't very high on Houston. Defense seems to be the priority right now for Oklahoma. Plus, in the next recruiting class the thought is that they can just get the next top group of receivers, which they've done and will likely continue doing.

This puts Minnesota in a bit of a waiting game. I'm still not ruling out him picking the Gophers on or before December 19th, but it seems more and more like he will bring his recruitment through the new year. If this happens I still expect Minnesota to be on him through this whole process. As of right now, I don't think that Oklahoma offers, regardless of Haselwood's decision. This helps Minnesota a great deal, but if he extends his recruitment, it allows others to get involved. Right now, it's Minnesota vs. the clock.

Cliff Notes Version:
-Georgia likely for Haselwood
-Oklahoma not set on adding another receiver, focusing on defense
-Minnesota still on him, should continue to be whether he decides this month or later

New Gophers playing

Wow did Peter Udoibok have a great game today in the all star game. Actually Williamson and Kramer did also. But it was two catches by Peter Udoibok that were very impressive. I didn't know about this kid until watching the game, and I came away very impressed.
Kramer did a great job throwing the ball for one TD and Williamson run for a TD and threw, yes threw for the 2 point conversion.

That chart that PJ held up at one of his press conferences ...

It showed the small incline, then a huge downward drop, followed by a massive uptick.

I don't know where it is (the picture), but holy shit is that graph applicable to this season.

We start out 3-0 and look pretty good doing it.

Then, our D is exposed versus good team teams and we are getting taken to the cleaners by Maryland, Nebraska, and Illinois.

Then, when the boat was showing leaks and many of us (me included) we're getting ready to jump ship...

PJ fired the DC.

We win some games including an absolute destruction of Purdue .

Then, we go into wisconsin and destroy the badgers to become bowl eligible.

Now, we are recruiting so we'll we the positions we all now we need to fix.

Long live the accuracy of that chart. Well done PJ.

Football Recruiting Monday recruiting notes

Things are starting to get interesting. Here's an update on the core remaining targets.

WR

Demariyon Houston: Gophers are his only official. Decommitted from Texas last week and talking to people it’s not clear how bad Texas wanted him. Houston was apparently never a solid Texas commit and wanted to sign in February. Oklahoma is the school to watch with Houston. They have yet to offer but are the homestate school, have been talking to him for a long time, and have visited him in-home and at school. Right now, he’s not a take for OU but the Sooners do like him. It might be a numbers game with OU and if they have room for him as Signing Day approaches.

Ahmarean Brown: Brown will visit Iowa State next weekend and make a decision shortly after.

OL

Isaiah Hookfin: As we’ve said Texas is the team to watch for Hookfin, and he’s visiting UT this coming weekend. The Orangebloods writers are confident Texas wants him and will get him, and Isaiah confirmed with me today he’s visiting Austin this weekend. But remember, Hookfin was also supposed to visit Auburn last weekend (he was at Minnesota instead) and the prior weekend was considering visiting Baylor or Southern Miss. That’s a pretty strange lineup of schools and decisions, so for now I wouldn’t be surprised with any outcome. If he doesn’t commit to Texas or end up visiting Texas this weekend, then I think the Gophers are in pretty good shape.

DL

MJ Anderson: Anderson is announcing his commitment on Wednesday at 3, and I think he’ll re-commit to the Gophers. He didn’t take visits elsewhere after the decommitment, and none of the writers who cover the main schools that were in touch with Anderson after his decommitment expect him to flip to their school. I think he firmed up after the visit.

Chris Daniels didn't end up visiting this past weekend, and I think him wanting to visit Missouri behind Minnesota's back had a lot to do with it. Fortunately, Keonte Schad is now solid and the Gophers might have more defensive line targets than they can take.

Darius Robinson: Remember, after his Minnesota official this past weekend, he announced a top four in no order of Minnesota, Michigan, Missouri, and Colorado. Michigan is kind of a wild card since they're recruiting him as a tight end. He's wanted by Missouri, but like Minnesota, they're short on numbers. And I would be surprised if Colorado is the choice because of the recent coaching change.
  • Michigan: I’m told there’s a chance Robinson already has or will have a committable offer to Michigan by the December Signing Day. The Wolverines want him as a tight end, though, and I’m not sure that’s where he wants to play.
  • Missouri: Sounds like the Tigers are an option but it’s kind of a numbers game. They’re about to flip Chris Daniels and are also talking to Kristian Williams (see below) and Isaiah McGuire. Missouri wants to take two of the four DTs they’re talking to and Power Mizzou thinks that at this point all have a committable offer. Both Williams and McGuire are taking officials this weekend, so we’ll see how things shake out.
  • Colorado: Just went through a coaching change but his primary recruiter was retained. Robinson’s fifth official visit was to Minnesota, but what’s interesting is that, because of NCAA rule changes, he could take a sixth visit to Colorado because of their coaching change. He already visited Boulder in September and really liked it. So with one last weekend before Signing Day, does he go to Ann Arbor or take a free visit to Boulder? The answer might be telling of whether or not he has a committable offer from Michigan.

Kristian Williams several weeks ago gave a top five in no order of Minnesota, Memphis, Indiana, and Tennessee. Williams texted me that he's planning to sign in February, which I think probably doesn't improve his odds to be a Gopher.
  • Indiana: Visited IU this past weekend.
  • Missouri: Visiting Mizzou this coming weekend. As I said above, Missouri may have more DT targets than they can take. He visited Indiana this past weekend and is visiting Missouri this coming weekend.
  • Memphis: Williams is from Memphis and the Tigers believe they have a real shot to get him. The Tigers have prioritized him a long time, are actually pretty decent, and Williams being from Memphis I'm assuming is friends with a handful of players on the team.
  • Tennessee: The Vols have made in-home visits, but Tennessee doesn't have room for him at the moment.

JUCO DE Niadre Zouzoua visited Baylor over the weekend and is likely to commit there, which is fine as I'm not sure Minnesota really had room for him.

DB

Minnesota thinks Damarion Williams might be the best JUCO corner in the country and was the JUCO defensive back they wanted most this past weekend. Now that he's in the boat, we'll see what happens with the other two

Told tonight that TJ Robinson was on an official to Rutgers this past weekend. I think the obvious takeaway from that is that it would be surprising if he signs with Minnesota in nine days.

Independence CC corner Tony Wallace was on campus this past weekend. Wallace committed to Arizona in high school, which of course is where Jahmile Addae was the DB coach at the time. Addae was his primary recruiter then. Wallace went to high school in Desert Pines, the same school as Cameron Wiley and Jordan Howden.

Wallace is a May grad and there's a chance he doesn't sign until February. He took an official to Nebraska and has a committable offer from them. What's interesting is that out of high school he almost signed with the Huskers, so he's pretty familiar with them too. Because of Minnesota's scholarship situation, if I was a betting man, I'd take my odds with Nebraska over Minnesota. He also just picked up an offer from TCU.

I haven't been able to get in touch with Dontye Carriere-Williams since his visit. Vanderbilt is the primary competition right now.

Timberwolves agree to trade Jimmy Butler to 76ers

All things considered, not a bad return either.

After a standoff that has stretched into the first part of the season, the Minnesota Timberwolves have agreed to trade Jimmy Butler to the Philadelphia 76ers, league sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski and Zach Lowe.

Butler and the Sixers expect to reach a deal on a long-term contract this summer, league sources told ESPN. The Sixers made the trade to add Butler to a Big Three with Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons.

The Timberwolves will receive a package that includes Robert Covington, Dario Saric and a second-round pick, sources said, and Minnesota will also send Justin Patton to Philadelphia.

Q&A with Brock Stull

MEN'S BASKETBALL | 12/14/2018 10:34:00 AM

Brock Stull
Class: Redshirt Senior
Major: Master's in Sport Management

Gopher Sports: As a transfer how has your adjustment been coming to Minnesota from UW-Milwaukee?
Brock Stull: Ever since I got here, it's been great. I'm excited to be a part of the Gopher family. I started school in September, so all summer I was working out by myself so I could stay in shape. Coming here has been unreal.

GS: What attracted you to the University of Minnesota?
BS: It was nice having a relationship with coach (Rob) Jeter, who I originally committed to at Milwaukee. On my visit here, I felt comfortable with the rest of the coaching staff, which is a big deal to me because there is a life after basketball and having these connections will help you in the long run.

GS: What do you see in your life after basketball?
BS: I see myself going down the coaching route eventually. The coaching tree that Coach Pitino, Conroy, and Jeter have is something that you can really learn from. I'd like to work with college players because of the age and helping athletes grow. Seeing how far I have come in my four years, and I want to help others do the same, that attracts me.

GS: What is your goal for the season?
BS:I haven't been to the tournament yet, so that's probably my biggest one.

GS: What have you liked about the culture surrounding the team?
BS: I think the goals that my teammates have is kind of like a business. Right now, everyone is focusing on improving and making the tournament or winning the Big Ten. We all believe we have that talent to do it, it's just a matter of coming together and doing it.

GS: What do you like to do off the court, when you're not playing basketball?
BS: I like playing video games. I like Fortnite and the new Red Dead Redemption 2. Red Dead is awesome, I've been on it night and day. Sleep schedule takes a hit from basketball and the game, but it's a ton of fun. With guys on the team, whoever really has a PlayStation and is down to get on, I'm always down to play together.

Gophers coach P.J. Fleck receives contract extension - Twincities.com

Seems like he earned it to me.

"Gophers head football coach P.J. Fleck will receive a one-year contract extension through the 2023 season, a source told the Pioneer Press on Thursday.

The announcement is expected to be made Friday and will need approval from the University of Minnesota’s Board of Regents at an upcoming meeting. Fleck’s deal will then span five more seasons and would expire in January 2024.

Fleck, who received a one-year extension before the regular-season finale a year ago, initially agreed to a five-year, $18 million contract in January 2017. His annual salary started at $3.5 million, with $50,000 increases.

In his first season in 2017, Fleck posted a 5-7 record, which kept the U one win shy of bowl eligibility. In his second season, Fleck’s team improved to 6-6, and Minnesota will appear in the Quick Lane Bowl against Georgia Tech (7-5) at Ford Field in Detroit on Dec. 26.

Minnesota, which has one of the youngest teams in the country, needed to win two of its final three games to become bowl eligible for the first time since 2016.

The Gophers’ 37-15 win over Wisconsin on Nov. 24 was Minnesota’s first victory over the Badgers since 2003, and the U’s first win in Madison since 1994..."

Football Recruiting Thursday notes

Some new info, and some repeat just in case anyone missed our last few updates this week.

Login to view embedded media With Houston not making a decision during his visit with Fleck, the clock starts ticking. Six days until signing day, and we’ll continue to have him on watch. The staff has just under a week to stay on him and convince him to hop in the Boat. Have heard about possible family reservations that could have to do with weather, and possibly looking for a closer school to home. As signing day gets closer, and if schools still aren’t telling him he has a spot, these thoughts could change in favor of Minnesota. Urgency, for his own good, is a big selling factor. I don’t mean that in a negative/pushy way at all, either. He likes Minnesota, and they want him. Other schools he may be interested in don’t have a guaranteed spot for him and may not come February, either. There’s the threat of waiting until February and going to a school that might not be your first, second, third, or even fourth choice.

They will be on him all week. He’s still on watch, and Minnesota is at the top of the list for him. If it gets past the week, and he opts to sign in February, Minnesota’s chances of getting Houston go down but I don’t think they’ll give up if it happens.

What’s next:
Login to view embedded media Minnesota got MJ Anderson to pledge back to the Gophers and that was high on their list of wants.

From here, we move to the next Gopher targets left on the board for defense. That would be DT Kristian Williams, and DE Darius Robinson. Kristian Williams, as Matt reported Monday seems to be making his decision in February. Darius Robinson is making his decision on December 19th. If Robinson opts to be a Gopher, Williams may no longer have a spot.
Login to view embedded media After talking to some sources, I think Minnesota is falling behind a bit for Robinson, but not out of it. Colorado is going through a coaching change and he won’t visit, Michigan wants him at tight end and it seems he wants to play defense. I think it’s a two-horse race between Minnesota and Missouri. He has avoided talking to media since he released his top group. A few FutureCasts were put in for Mizzou yesterday and was told it was due to them hearing other top schools having room. Don’t count Minnesota out.
Login to view embedded media Kristian Williams is signing in February. Expect Minnesota to stay on him through the next signing period. They’re happy with it now, and will be thrilled with their D-Line class if he decides to hop in with the current group.
Login to view embedded media Isaiah Hookfin is visiting Texas this weekend. All sources indicate the he’s going to pick Texas. Why has he delayed it this long if it’s such a sure thing? He had an offer from them in Early November. Minnesota and Baylor the other schools to watch if it turns out he is unable to commit to Texas. If that happens, I think Minnesota is in a good spot.

Two more notes:
Login to view embedded media Have been told that Vanderbilt TE commit Jeffrey Blake has heard from Minnesota as well, and he was on campus this past weekend. He wants to play defense in college, and Vandy wants him at TE so he’s looking around. I don’t believe he has a committable offer at this point, but he’s one to monitor.
Login to view embedded media Have been told that TJ Robinson to Rutgers is likely. Congrats to him for finding a good spot!

Football Recruiting New defensive end target sets Minnesota official

Login to view embedded media Just talked to Prince Okituama and he told me that he was coming to Minnesota for an official visit on December 14th-16th, and we have confirmed that news. His profile will take time to update, but he also told me that Kentucky came by and offered this week. Minnesota wants him to play defensive end or possibly outside linebacker.

He plays both defensive end and outside linebacker on film.
