MJH, you said the the mystery visitor "more ore less committed." Is this still true? Is he still a silent verbal to us that is publicly committed to another school? Can you tell us who it is or do we still have to wait? It wasn't Jimmie Terry, was it?

Claeys opened up that all you have to go off of is film to prepare for teams, and if you are able to show things that are different it can create confusion for offenses. A lot of the things are pretty easy to get lined up in, and when there isn’t a threat for a running game it allows you to do those different things. Sawvel did a great job with mixing up fronts and utilizing different coverages without confusing our own players.

Talking about walk-on Blake Cashman, Tracy said that when you play spread teams and one-back teams, you don’t have to be the biggest guy, if you want to go get guys and love the game you can succeed as Blake has. The energy that he plays with and brings to everyone else is a great fit for the Gophers. It gives a lot of guys that were considered “tweeners” the opportunity to play. After two years, teams can let walk-on’s know if will be awarded a scholarship. After two years, you can award them a scholarship and it will not count towards your next recruiting class. If you award them before the two years are done, then it does count against a scholarship for the next year. Claeys said in the past they have found a way to help those kids out that do help the program, and they will do the same for Blake.

On the ten suspended players, it was determined again that charges were not going to be pressed. Asked about his feelings on the program and meeting soon with Mark Coyle, Coach Claeys felt like the team has continued to get better, that this has been the best team they’ve had since they’ve been here. He mentions the team’s GPA is above a 3.0, and that it has been for six of the past seven semesters. The team’s graduation rate is the highest that it has been, as well as the APR is the highest that it has been for the team. He mentions that not only are they getting better on the football field, but that they are going to class and graduating.

He also noted that when dealing with 17-22 year old kids, there is always going to be things that come up that coaches have to deal with. The recruiting continues to get better, and that we have a lot of younger players that are making plays for the team. There were only 13 or 14 seniors that played very much, so he says he feels very good about the team going forward and competing in the Big Ten.

Mike Max said he didn’t understand how people took Claeys’ tweet supporting the players and linked it to an incident. He felt that Claeys received some unfair criticism for his tweet. Claeys said that he does feel support from the public, and that he understands that it is a slippery slope, and that he could’ve worded his tweet better. He also wanted people to understand that in no way was his tweet about supporting people being affected by sexual assault. He commented that it is a learning experience for everyone, and that the team has high standards, and that his team would never support sexual assault.

As for meeting with Mark Coyle, Tracy did not know if the meeting Tuesday was set in stone, and that he looks forward to visiting with Mark. He believes all of that is better handled behind closed doors and not in the media.

Questioning the impact the incident has had on recruiting, Claeys noted that it is a dead period right now, but they are keeping kids informed on the incident and that around January 12th they can get back on the road to recruiting and finishing this class.

Mike asked about Clemson shutting out Ohio State. Coach mentioned that Clemson’s defensive line had an impact, but also Ohio State’s starting guard was injured right away and things got thrown off. That’s one thing about college football, anything can happen and whichever team shows up ready to play and makes less mistakes usually wins. He also said that it is getting harder and harder to win if you don’t score points. Tracy joked that the Holiday Bowl probably didn’t like their game being as low-scoring as it was.

Dave inquired if the team has to recruit two different ways until it hears back about the suspended players. Dave stated that their maybe a lot of dust in the air. Tracy said he is going to try and recruit a football team each year, a few guys at each position. The way they break up the scholarships is that they want to sign a few kids at each position. He says there are plenty of players out there, and that he believes this recruiting class will help them in the future.

Having a 9-4 record this year has been big for the program, which is the most for the Gophers since 2003. Shows moving forward we are competitive, especially winning a bowl in a national spotlight. In recruiting now, Claeys said they can recruit more kids and he’s very pleased with the way things are going. With young kids making plays, it shows that if young kids are ready to play, they will play them.

Dave expressed that he was pleased with the way Matt Leidner played even though it was a surprise that he started. Coach Claeys found out the day before the Tyler Moore would not be playing, but in preparing for a bowl game they had 10 practices, so back-up players got a lot of reps and Bart Miller could work with different combinations. They had Jonah Pirsig taking snaps the day before in case they got in trouble. Matt Leidner knew all of the calls and got everyone in the right place.

Tracy went and saw Sid Hartman in the hospital before they left, calling him a special person and wishing him a speedy recovery.

My guess:

Our Gopher wrestlers are at the prestigious Southern Scuffle wrestling tournament tomorrow and Monday, and we have our full line-up with Ethan Lizak (125), Tommy Thorn (141), and Brandon Krone (174) back from suspension. Larry Early III (165) is also back from suspension, but is not attending the Scuffle (not sure why?).

We've shifted our line-up around for the last half of the year:

- #13 174 lb. Nick Wanzek dropped down to 165 (if he can handle the weight loss, I like this move).
- 165 lb. starter Brandon Kingsley dropped down to 157 (he's been terrible at 165, so maybe this will help!!)
- Last year part time starter at 165 lbs. Brandon Krone up to 174 (not sure how this will go, but someone needs to start at 174).
- Last year's starter at 184 lbs. Chris Pfarr dropped down to 174, (if he can handle the weight loss, we need someone to start at 174. CP has been improving a lot, not sure who wins between him and BK).
- 157 lb. RS Freshman Carlson Brolsma dropped down to 149 (if he can handle the weight loss, he might get a chance to back-up Fredy Stroker).

So, how will we do???

Match Notes Southern Scuffle


Before hitting the remainder of its Big Ten schedule full speed, Minnesota (3-1) will ring in the New Year in Chattanooga, Tenn., at the 14th annual Southern Scuffle. Wrestling in the Scuffle has become a holiday tradition for the Gophers, who will be competing in the event for the 12th time. In those 11 previous appearances, Minnesota has finished in the top five 10 times, including three team titles and four runner-up performances.

When, Where and How

The first collegiate matches of 2017 will be down in Chattanooga, where the action begins at 9 a.m. (Central) on Sunday, Jan. 1 from the floor of McKenzie Arena. The opening day will include pigtails, championship matches through the quarterfinals (three full rounds) and the first four rounds of wrestlebacks. Action will resume on Monday at 9 a.m., with semifinals and consolation rounds, culminating with title bouts and medalist matches beginning at 6 p.m.

Who Will Be at UTC… And at What Weight?

A group of 16 Gophers will make the trip to wrestle on the campus of Tennessee-Chattanooga, with five weights featuring multiple representatives for the Maroon and Gold. That multiplicity begins at 125 pounds, where three Gophers are set to compete. Ethan Lizak will return to the lineup and be joined by the two men who have filled the 125 lineup spot for the Gophers so far this year – Steve Polakowski and Skyler Petry. At 149 pounds, Fredy Stroker will return to action along with Carson Brolsma, who began the year at 157 but will drop down for the Scuffle. At Brolsma’s former weight class, No. 10 Jake Short will look to build on his Cliff Keen Invitational title and will be joined by Brandon Kingsley, who returns to 157 (where he wrestled last season) after beginning this year at 165. The 174-pound slot in the lineup, which will be vacated by No. 13 Nick Wanzek as he drops down to 165, will feature both Brandon Krone and Chris Pfarr, who are meeting in the middle after competing at 165 and 184 last season, respectively. Lastly, at heavyweight, No. 6 Michael Kroells will have company from teammate Rylee Streifel. Weights with a lone Gopher will be 133, home to No. 18 Mitch McKee; 141, where Tommy Thorn will return to the lineup; 165 with Wanzek; 184, where Bobby Steveson will look to carry his momentum from a strong weekend in Michigan earlier this month, and; 197, starring undefeated and second-ranked Brett Pfarr.

So Far This Season

The Southern Scuffle will be the second premier in-season tournament for the Gophers in the past 30 days after Minnesota placed fourth at the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas during the opening weekend in December. Two Gophers – Short at 157 and Brett Pfarr at 197 – won individual titles with 5-0 showings in Sin City, while Kroells, McKee and Wanzek also turned in podium performances.

Prior to Vegas, the Gophers had wrestled in two other tournaments, opening the season at the Daktronics Open in South Dakota where, among Minnesota’s four finalists, Lizak won the 125-pound title and McKee, Short and Kroells all finished as runners-up. In a less-conventional tournament format, Minnesota competed at the Journeymen/Asics Collegiate Classic in Troy, N.Y. the following week. In that pool-based, round-robin event, four Gophers won titles: McKee, Kroells, Chris Pfarr and Sam Brancale.

Between the Cliff Keen Invitational and the upcoming Scuffle, the Gophers muscled through a Michigan road trip to open their Big Ten season 2-0. After a 20-17 victory in East Lansing on a Friday, Minnesota rolled into Ann Arbor and upset No. 10 Michigan, 22-18, on Sunday afternoon. Including a home split with No. 20 South Dakota State and No. 1 Oklahoma State, the Gophers are 3-1 in dual action this season.

Last Time Around

The Gophers are looking to avenge the program’s lowest-ever finish in the Scuffle (sixth) from last January with an improved showing this year. In last year’s tournament, four Gophers placed, led by Brett Pfarr’s runner-up finish at 197 pounds. Heavyweight Michael Kroells finished third, first-year starter Tommy Thorn, competing at 141, took fifth and Sam Brancale, wrestling at 133, placed eighth. Those performances, along with those of their teammates, gave the Gophers 79.5 team points, putting them behind Penn State, Oklahoma State, Lehigh, North Carolina and Cornell. All of those teams, save for the Nittany Lions, will be in the tournament this weekend as well.

A Nationally Elite Field

The Scuffle field is always one of the best among all in-season tournaments, and this year is no exception. Nine top-25 teams are set for the event, including five ranked in the top 15. In addition to No. 13 Minnesota, that list includes top-ranked Oklahoma State, No. 5 Missouri, No. 8 Cornell and No. 9 Lehigh. Looking back at last year’s brackets, a dozen teams that placed in the top 15 will be back in Chattanooga this weekend.

Parting Shot

While last year’s team had limited Scuffle experience, this year’s lineup will feature plenty of wrestlers who have seen action on the Mocs’ mats. Of the 16 Gophers expected to make the trip and compete, 13 wrestled in last year’s event, some attached and others unattached. The only three Gophers making their Scuffle debuts this weekend will be true freshman McKee, redshirt freshman Brolsma, and Short, who missed last year’s event due to injury.

My predictions:

I think almost our whole team will exceed their seeds, except for Brett Pfarr. Our best chances to win are #2 Michael Kroells (lost to #1 Schafer last time, but he should turn that around), #2 Brett Pfarr (lost a close match to #1 J'Den Cox last year, but he could turn that around), and #7 Ethan Lizak (who would have to beat #1 Peters or #2 Cruz, which is possible).

As a team, we could finish as high as 2nd or 3rd, or as low as 5th. I think 3rd or 4th would be a success!

One other side note of interest: PSU's Redshirt Freshman Mark Hall (Apple Valley, MN) is entered at 174. That weight is tough, but it's not one of the deepest. It will be interesting to see if he can win it.

U leaders called to special meeting Tuesday to discuss Tracy Claeys' future

With Tracy Claeys’ future as Gophers football coach still uncertain, the University of Minnesota Board of Regents have become involved in the discussions.

On Tuesday, Regents chair Dean Johnson and vice chair David McMillan will meet with university President Eric Kaler, Gophers athletic director Mark Coyle, university general counsel Douglas Peterson and others, according to two people familiar with the plan.

Claeys is not scheduled to be at the meeting, and several sources say it’s unclear if he’ll learn Tuesday whether he’ll be retained as coach.


Last Wednesday, Coyle issued a statement that said: “Now that our football team has completed its season following an exciting win in Tuesday night’s Holiday Bowl, Coach Claeys and I will take this opportunity to reflect on this past season before sitting down together to talk about the future and my expectations for our football program.”

After the 17-12 upset over Washington State in San Diego, Claeys headed to see family in Kansas, and Coyle headed to Idaho with his family. Monday was a University holiday, so Tuesday is the first day Claeys, Coyle and other officials have been back in the office.

Scoggins: Keeping Claeys is reasonable option in Gophers' messy situation
Claeys, 48, is 11-8 as Gophers head coach, including 2-0 in bowl games, since replacing Jerry Kill, who resigned for health reasons in October, 2015.

The Gophers won nine games this season for the first time since they went 10-3 under Glen Mason in 2003. But on Dec. 13, Coyle suspended 10 players from the team indefinitely in connection with the alleged Sept. 2 sexual assault.

Hennepin County has twice reviewed the case and declined to press charges, but an internal investigation by the University’s office of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action (EOAA) led to the suspensions.

The EOAA recommended expulsion for Ray Buford, KiAnte Hardin, Carlton Djam, Dior Johnson and Tamarion Johnson, one-year suspensions for Seth Green, Kobe McCrary, Mark Williams and Antoine Winfield Jr., and probation for Antonio Shenault.

Gophers players boycotted all team activities for two days, protesting the administrations handing of the suspensions. After they announced their boycott, Claeys tweeted his support for the players, which publicly aligned him against the administration.

Signing Day is four weeks from tomorrow, and we have no clarity on who the head football coach or any of his assistants will be. A month before Signing Day!!!

How's that helping recruiting, which is the lifeblood of every single college football program in America?

If Coyle is scrambling to find a coach, or doesn't know what to do with Claeys at this point, his incompetence level is worse than any of us imagined.

If this lingers beyond today with no announcement of a new coach or a Claeys extension, we are royally f*cked. Maybe we're there already.

I'm just shaking my head at how this has all gone down. Only in Minnesota.

I'm thinking the better non-P5 conferences are known as "Group of 5". If I'm wrong, my apologies, but that's what I mean.

Suppose Fleck wants to come to Minnesota, but he wants $5 Million per year on a 6 year contract? Does Coyle still want him?

What would the U pay to have their first choice.

I live here in Ohio and it is such a unique place because of geography, when it comes to team allegiance.... Most people in the state are Ohio State or Michigan fans.. But where I live in Ohio, I am actually CLOSER to both Michigan and Michigan State campuses than I am from Ohio State. If you live on the east side of the state in Youngstown, you are roughly equal distance from Penn State and Ohio State.. Cleveland is only a half an hour farther from Ann Arbor than it is from Columbus. If you live in Cincinnati, it is closer to Ohio State but its roughly the same distance from Indiana University as Duluth would be from Minneapolis. So in Ohio, you have strong fanbases from all those Big 10 schools as well as schools that are geographically close like Notre Dame and Pittsburgh outside the conference. SO the post game arguments begin as to who is the best Big Ten team, even if they lost.

I could easily argue Minnesota was as impressive in our bowl appearance as anyone in the Big Ten, this year. SHOULDA, COULDA, WOULDA in the games where we almost beat Penn State, Nebraska, and Iowa.. Michigan fans will tell you that they lost their 3 games this year by a total of 5 points, so that is their argument even though they had the losses. Ohio State has the most talent but really only had the Oklahoma win as their best win of the season though Wisconsin and Michigan were nice wins. Penn State lost to Michigan and then USC but I would argue that, by whatever the rules exist, they have the right to say they were the Big Ten's best. Wisconsin's fans are not complaining but they only lost their 3 games by a TD each to 3 top-5 or top-10 teams, so they could be in the discussion of "almost the best"

Always love the arguing of local fans but just shows we have a great conference of fans that take pride in their teams. IMO, THIS REALLY INDICATES WE HAVE A GREAT GREAT CONFERENCE WITH TEAMS THAT PLAY CLOSE GAMES THAT A PLAY OR 2 IN EACH GAMECAN CHANGE THE COMPLEXION OF A GAME AND POSSIBLY A SEASON

As long as we're waiting to see what the hell is going on with us I think it's a good time to point out that Iowa has lost 5 bowl games in a row and has been out scored 80-10 in the first half of the last 3 games. (120-47 overall).

Who Hates Iowa

Many are spouting the woe-is-me attitude about what we lack.

What we HAVE is an established team and program in place. Most new hires come into really crappy situations they totally have to rebuild from scratch. That's not us (for a change).

That combined with the new facilities would make this a pretty attractive destination for many comparatively speaking.

That gives me some hope if do cut Claeys that we could attract a notable candidate ... if we're finally willing to play with the big boys and foot the bill for it. That's my biggest worry. We've never been willing to play ball money-wise with the best.

Claeys will be retained with a condition, if he is willing to be the heavy with his own kids.
He will get another chance to make a stand for his "good kids". Or will he sell out and do what's best for him?

At the end of the day, I'm afraid these young kids will be the ONLY people that will be negatively impacted by this fiasco.

And everyone else will skate away free as a bird. Man, I hope I am wrong. But Kaler and Coyle have played him like a drum the whole time. Will he finally stand up to them and gain some respect or will he fold again?

ESPN.com has an article highlighting him as the NBA coach on the hottest hot seat at this time. I don't know that the Bulls will move on from him after this season, but there is already speculation. Personally, I think he is a college coach and could do a great job here for a long time.

My question is if he does get fired how does the University put themselves in position to hire him? What are the chances that Richard can get us into the NCAA tournament this year to make this question a moot point? If Richard has a decent year does he try to get a different job? Does anyone think Richard is in it for the long haul here?

Went over to the Purdue board and their thread titles are pretty hard on Painter. They say that Pitino outcoached Painter and everyone's mad at Painter. Shows that...

Pitino can coach. I've never understood the complaints that Pitino is always outcoached as that just doesn't seem to be the case. Tubby routinely was outcoached...Pitino not so much. Just my opinion.

Also shows that we're not the only ones hard on our coaches...football or basketball. Purdue is #15 in the nation and their fans are super and probably irrationally upset with him.
