Kyrei Fisher and Dimitri Moore update

Some of you may have seen Dimitri Moore tweet out that he's visiting Colorado this weekend with Kyrei Fisher:

Was finally able to confirm today that Fisher's joining Moore on the visit.

Haven't been able to get a hold of either one for post-visit interviews, by the way. Sorry about that.

Texas Tech was at one point considered to be the favorite for Moore, but I don't think they're in the picture anymore. He's spoken highly of Colorado recently and Vanderbilt is considered a dark horse because he really values academics. Minnesota's definitely competitive for him. They've put in a lot of effort with him and he's been on campus twice. I think Colorado or Vanderbilt is more likely but the Gophers are very much in the mix.

Sooner Scoop report on Kyrei Fisher

Link: Fisher impresses in Union loss to Norman North

"Fisher looked the part of an explosive pass-rusher most of the night for the Union defense. The Minnesota commitment constantly harassed the North backfield by beating tackles with ferocious hand action, while attacking their outside shoulder. The 6-foot-3, 230-pound outside linebacker can still rely on his raw athleticism, but possesses the frame and tools to potentially be a steal for the Golden Gophers."

Revealing Comments by Claeys on Tackle Injury

Interested in any thoughts on TC's comments that once we lost starting tackle in game up 17-0, decided to go conservative to prevent Rhoda from more pass rush, fumble, etc. On one hand can't blame him with need for must win with first game starter, don't give inferior opponent any reason to get on roll. Defense playing well, so don't make a mistake. The other view is this seems a bit like how he has approached the entire three BIG games so far, very conservative. In general, it served him well vs PSU and Terps, not against IA. As the year evolves down the stretch, it will be interesting to see if he and Johnson build towards a more confident offensive team approach particularly when Mitch back vs Illinois, because even if you rely on Smith and Brooks to pound and catch, you can play somewhat more aggressive.

West Teams W/L Scenarios Wide-Open

First, ignore the painful thought in the back of the head we coulda, woulda, shoulda won first two games we would have had inside track to division, even if probably true. Here is one view:
Wisconsin (2 losses already): at IA, at NU, and Neb (best team, 7-2 likely but might drop one more 6-3)
Neb (0): at Wisc and at OSU and MN (7-2 best case, 6-3 with loss to MN)
NU (1) at OSU, at MN, PSU and WISC (6-3 best case)
IA (1) Wisc, Michigan, at PSU, Neb (6-3 best case)
MN (2) at Neb, NU, at Wisc (6-3 best case)

Illinois could play spoiler with an upset of MN or IA or NU. East help - not really except from OSU and Michigan. MSU down year hurts us since others finally playing them and beating them. PSU does host IA and could win that game.

So could be wild final six games with everyone playing each other.

Redshirts

Barring a rash of injuries, we are likely past the point of taking the redshirts off any additional true freshmen.

The gophersports.com roster lists 24 true freshme, which includes walkons.

By my count, seven have played. Antoine Winfield, Kamal Martin, Thomas Barber, Tyler Johnson, Coney Durr, Taiyon Devers and Carter Coughlin.

So it appears that 17 of the 24 true freshmen will be redshirted.

I'd say those are pretty typical numbers. Thoughts?

What is up with BTN only having 1 B1G game last Saturday?

What was the deal on Saturday with only the one 2:30 game? During B1G season hasn't their always been at least 2 games? I would rather have been on BTN with their production versus listening to Beth Mowens. Plus, I don't know if every carrier provides ESPNU and ESPNNews. Why couldn't the Gopher v Maryland game be on BTN at night rather than Noon? I suppose this has to do with the contract with ESPN but with 14 teams you would think BTN would have at least 2 games per Saturday.

I checked and next week BTN has 3 games....the U gets screwed again with another game on ESPNU at 11am....I know Rutgers is no draw but this is homecoming!

Great Road conference win...the good and the things that need to improve

Positives :

We held them to 10...yes...10 points.

Our pass rush had stunts and twists.

Our secondary played very well.

We ran a screen pass!

Our interior line run blocking was good.

Our special teams were good.

Things that we need to improve in order to keep winning :

Our 3rd down play calling was conservative crap at best.

Our passing game is so bad because either - the QB locks onto 1 WR , the receivers are not good route runners, the D can cover tight because they don't have to fear deep balls or double move routes.

Penalties.

All in all, I expected a loss here and we came out and out-athleted them. Well done Golden Gophers!

And p.s. , kudos to Slab of Bacon as he is 6-0 so far in this year's predictions.

The Official Big Ten Bowl game lineup

Big Ten
The Big Ten gets a team in the Rose Bowl. It’s the Big Ten Champion if it’s not in the College Football Playoff. Also, the Big Ten is eligible for the Orange Bowl three times between 2014 and 2016.

Orange will pick the highest-ranked team from Big Ten, SEC or Notre Dame to play a team from the ACC. If the Orange takes a Big Ten team, the Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl will take an ACC team in place of the Big Ten.

1. Rose Bowl (New Year’s Six)
– Rose Bowl will choose a Big Ten representative if one of the conference’s teams is in the playoff

2. Orange Bowl vs. ACC or Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl vs. SEC
– Agreement is for five different teams in six years, so no Minnesota or Michigan.

3. Outback Bowl vs. SEC
– Agreement is for five different teams in six years, so no Wisconsin or Northwestern.

4. National Funding Holiday Bowl vs. Pac-12
– Agreement is for five different teams in six years, so no Nebraska or Wisconsin.

5. TaxSlayer Bowl or Music City Bowl vs. SEC
– ACC and Big Ten combine with each getting three appearances in six years. The Big Ten played in TaxSlayer last year and will most likely go to Music City. No Penn State or Iowa in TaxSlayer.

6. New Era Pinstripe Bowl vs. ACC
– Not official, but would prefer to have eight different teams in eight years, so no Penn State or Indiana if possible.

7. Foster Farms Bowl vs. Pac-12
– Agreement is for five different teams in six years, so no Maryland or Nebraska.

8. Quick Lane Bowl vs. ACC

9. Zaxby’s Heart of Dallas Bowl vs. Conference USA
– Agreement for three Zaxby’s Heart of Dallas and three Armed Forces bowls in six years. Illinois played in Dallas two years ago, it’s Big 12 vs. Navy in Armed Forces this year.

Becht and Boiman as ESPN TV crew -lousy

or Dreadful. Becht did not know names of many players--just said their jersey # or their positions, do your homework. On the Terp's 4th and one they snapped it to their upback, however Durkin called a Timeout. They chose not to even mention it.They both felt that folks watching the game were more interested in their career's as TE than watching the game. They babeled about their career's, the fields they played on, former teammates---who cares? I do not remember either one. Also, why throw out thoughts on upcoming games when nobody knows who you are?

O-Line talk.........Just get rid of the silly penalties.. Otherwise we are fine

Guys, we are playing pretty well on the o-line.. We need to get guys healthy that are nicked up but our unit is playing pretty good and Weyler has been a godsend in many ways... PENALTIES are crucial to a team like ours who likes to run the ball a lot... We don't do well in 2nd/3rd and longs.. If there are issues, that is where a big part of it can be solved.

These are SIMILAR scenarios to ours, that if you think about it, change the dynamic of a drive, big time.. And can affect us a lot.

Scenario 1: We run for 7 yards on first down, throw an incompletion on 2nd down, illegal movement so now we are 3rd and 8, which becomes a passing down.

Scenario 2: Run a read option for 3 yards. Running play for 5 more. An illegal shift before 3rd down so we are now in 3rd and 7.

Scenario 3. Illegal motion on first down, run for 8 yards, pass out in the flats for 2 yards, illegal motion before 3rd down..Now we are in a 3rd and 10.

Penalties and turnovers are things that are momentum and drive stoppers that cause all kinds of grief.. IF THE O-LINE deserves any criticism, its about penalties and not about performance!!
