Spring Practice: Coaches starting to draw up position charts

Based on the incoming talent this fall and what they have this spring, the coaches are starting to assemble positions charts.
At his first spring football press conference, head coach Tracy Claeys said he and his staff would begin assembling a position chart two weeks into practice. Claeys did not speak to the media after practice on Thursday, but defensive coordinator Jay Sawvel touched on how the coaching staff is taking its time putting together a position chart as opposed to a depth chart.
"We don't really worry about that (depth chart) as much. Right now, part of it is the fact that we know there's going to be probably quite a few guys that come in new in the fall that will have to contribute in some role, too," Sawvel said.
The position chart is also missing some pieces. Sawvel said the defense is minus three safeties this spring in Duke McGee, Ace Rogers and Zo Craighton, who is dealing with an ankle injury.
"And we only have four corners on scholarship here right now, we have three more coming, so that changes things, too," he said. "We just tell them don't worry about depth chart or what you think you are or where you're at right now."
Sawvel said the staff will start looking at depth charts toward the end of spring.
"When we really (can say) "Ok, now we have everything in, you've had practice after practice to do it...are you doing the right things? Are you making plays? Are you being productive? Right now, these last two days on defense we've installed a whole bunch of stuff. We worked through it pretty good but it's hard to evaluate a guy the first time you put something in because he doesn't play as fast as he will maybe Tuesday or next Thursday."
Sawvel said he's looking forward to how the linebackers will perform next season, especially with the additions of U.S. Army All-American Carter Coughlin and three-star prospect Thomas Barber, two linebackers who will most certainly see playing time as freshman.

3/24 Practice Notes

I had an exam today that almost completely overlapped with practice, so I was only able to attend about a half hour of practice, plus the media session. Thus, this is pretty slim so make sure to read Nick's great write-up on practice here.

There was hitting on the lines but no tackling, at least not while I was there. There weren't as many spectators as the first practice, and certainly not as many high school coaches. A handful of local college coaches were in attendance.

Leidner was more mobile than I expected him to be. He was putting weight on both feet while making throws. Far from full speed and wasn't moving around a whole lot, but he also didn't seem to be shying away from his left foot too much.

Demry made some nice throws. This is nothing new but he has better pace on his throws than Leidner or Rhoda. He also seemed to do a decent job of being decisive and getting rid of the ball when he was under pressure, which was a lot. Both he and Rhoda missed on some short passes, though.

Shannon Brooks broke off a nice "run", if you can call it that considering there's no tackling. James Johannesson continues to look pretty good and more agile than I thought he'd be when he was in high school. He'll make little jump cuts. He has pretty short strides, so he's able to get back up to speed fairly quickly after cutting. He's also always seemed to have decent vision. I don't remember JFC taking any reps.

Wolitarsky, Carter, and Still were the wide receivers working the most with the first team.

The offensive line struggled, especially run blocking. Garrison Wright got snaps at left tackle, and I didn't notice any major blunders. I wasn't able to key in on Mose Hall on the offensive line. I'll definitely do so next time.

Jaylen Waters made a couple plays today. He's small but has a nose for the ball. Ray Buford got reps with the first team.

Recruits I saw were Gavin Blomberg and Tanner Sundt. Billy Glasscock was spending a lot of time talking to a kid in an Osseo shirt, who I'm assuming was Nash Jensen. I thought I saw Kolade Amusan too, but couldn't tell for sure because he was across the field. Awaiting a text back with confirmation one way or the other.

Also, Claeys appears to have lost some weight. I'm very happy for him if that's true.

Brad Underwood

Oklahoma State just hired Stephen F. Austin coach Brad Underwood. I read the reader comments on ESPN raving about him. I especially enjoyed what one Big-12 fan said - "Brad Underwood and Jamie Dixon....the Big-12 just got tougher!".

I replied to him "Well....it's not exactly Jim Harbaugh and Lovie Smith joining the Big Ten. But I guess they are okay hires."

That was yesterday. Today I left this comment - "An indication as to how much hype this hire has generated....28 comments....and the story is already off of the headlines. Even the Dixon hire, which happened the day before, is still there. Sorry Oklahoma State. This was a dull and bad hire."

In-state 2017 targets at spring practice

Offensive lineman Eric Abojei and Nash Jensen and defensive end Tanner Sundt were at practice today.

Jensen, who is from Osseo H.S., has an offer from Wyoming and interest from Wisconsin, Iowa and Iowa State. Sundt, who has an offer from South Dakota State, his lone offer, plays at Farmington H.S.

Abojei attended Minnesota's previous open practice. I spoke with Abojei after practice and he said Minnesota is his stop school at the moment. I'll post more from practice and my interview with Abojei later tonight.

Babe Ruth and the Gophers

A friend of mine has a Ruth autographed ball, and I was doing a little research to establish the provenance of the ball (inscription to the "boys home" in Minneapolis) While tracking down Ruth's many stops in Duluth, Minneapolis, Sleepy Eye and his barnstorming days in Iowa, I came across this article from just last year. Maybe old news to some, but I originally missed it. Found it interesting so will re-share.
